To all whom ttf/nay concern:

Be it known that I, FREDEnIcK SHIoKLnL of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have made certain new and' useful Improvements iu Gap for Stop-Boxes for Water' and Gas-Pipes; and I do hereby declare. that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to a cap-box and cover for the stop-boxes used to enclose the shut-off cocks of gas and waterpipes in cities, which said stop-boxes are usually placed inthe street sidewalk, with the cover or cap .on a level therewith. These caps, if placed loosely on the stop-boxes, are liable to be disarranged and lost, and if hinged to one side of the box, 'to rise vertically, they very easily get out of order and broken.. It is to remedy these defects, and produce a cap so hinged and, constructed as to be capable of sustaining the rough usage to which these covers are liable, that is'the subject of this invention. To enable those skilled in the art to make and'use my improved cap, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

The stop-box A has a flange, (t, at its upper end, in the usual manner, and, in addition to these usual parts,

there is a lugA, attached to one of its sides, near the top, or just below the flange, the bottom part ofv this lug being cored out at a', so as to form a seat for the head, b, of the pivotpin b, which secures the cap B to the stop-box. I

i The pin b will be of suiiicient length'to allow the cap to rise entirely-out of its rebating in the box, before the head l1 shall strike the top of the chambers a', and when the cap is raised up as high as the head b will allow it to go, it may be swung around, as shown by the dotted lines in tigt, 2, thus completely uncovering the box. y

The cap, B, may be constructed with a lip, overlapping the flange, a, which would be a mechanical equivalent for the rebating in the Said iiangefor the formation of theecap-seat.

In llike manner, the pivot-pin Yb may be formed wholly of a pin, or in part of a pin or swivel, and in part of a chain, so as to answer the ,same purpose as that herein described.

The cap, B, should be provided Withia lifting-rail, b3, formed by the sunken recesses on either side of it, in the face of the said cap-plate. This lifting-rail may be seized by the person desiring toopen the cap, and the plate or cover B raised up thereby.
