Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907 Application filed April 4:, 1906. Serial No. 309,792.
To all 1071,0711, it may curl/oer:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. I-IoAK, a citi- Zen oi the United States of America, residing at Sedalia, in the county of Pet-it's and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Governors i'or Steam-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in governors for steannengines, the object of the invention. bein to provide simple and effective means aciing in connection with and controlled by the ordinary governing device for controlling i he speed of the engine by varying the str ke or degree of move ment oi the admission-valve or power-controlling device.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation. of a reciprocating steam-ongine embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a detail of the yoked end of the operai ing-lever.
In the drawings, 1 designates the enginecylinder; 2, the steam-chest; 3, the engineshait; 4, the fly-wheel thereon; 5, the piston rod; 6, the rod of the admission or controlling valve operating in the st cam-chest, which may be an ordinary type of slide-valve; 7, the valve-controlling eccentric mounted on the engine-shaft; 8, the eccentric rod, and 9 a centrifugal governor driven by a belt connection 10 from the engine-shaft.
In carryin my invention into practice I provide means between the valve-rod and eccentric-rod and controlled in action by the governor to vary the stroke of the valve-rod and degree of movement of the admissionvalve. As shown, the rod 6 slides at its outer end in a guide 11 and has pivot ally connected thereto a shifting fulcrum-blocltlZ, arranged to slide within a curved or arcuate slotted link 13, said link being pivoted at its lower end to the rod 8 and at its upperend to the outer end of an operating-lever 14, pivotally attached at its opposite end to the steamchest or some other suitable part of the engine. The outer end of the lever 14 is yieldingly supported by a resistance-spring 15 and is formed with a yoke or guide passage 16 for the reception of the'sliding sleeve 17 of the governor. The arms of the yoke are provided with projections 18 to enter a groove 19 in the governor-sleeve, whereby the lever is connected to move with the sleeve, while the latter is permitted to have free independent rotation.
In the operation of the device it will be ap parent that as the sleeve or collar 17 rises or falls on the stem of the governor motion will be communicated through the same to raise or lower the outer end of the lever, thus varying the position of the link 13 and the disposition of the block 12 therein, whereby a shifting connection between the eccentric and valve rods is provided to vary the stroke of the valve-rod and the degree of opening or closing movement of the admissionvalve to regulate the supply of steam to control the speed of the engine.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-' In a governor mechanism for reciprocating steam-engines, an admission-valve having a sliding stem, an eccentric operated by the engine-shait, a centrifugal governor driven by said shaft, a spring-supported lever actuated by the governor, and a shifting connection comprising a member pivotally connected with the valve-stem and a slotted link pivotally connected with the lever and eccentricrod and slidably engaging said mem ber.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN A. HOAK.
IVitnesses:
DAVID KINSEY, M. A. AYREs.
