To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NEWTON BALDWIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Coldwater, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in l\Iolding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Hy invention relates to devices for molding plastic or earthenware pipes, tiles, blocks, &c., and has for its object the provision of a molding apparatus consisting of sheet-metal cylinders concentrically arranged with a sp acing device comprising a plurality of arms that seat between said cylinders to space them apart while the plastic material is poured into the mold and to serve as puddling-sticks in settling the plastic material in the mold.
The details ofconstruction and operation of my invention will be fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my invention Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view, and Fig. 3 a detail view of the spacing device.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved mold consists of an outer cylinder, form, or casing A and an inner cylinder, form, or core B, made, preferably, of sheet metal; but because of the even distribution of pressure by the construction hereinafter described I have found that the larger of said cylinders A may be made of heavy waterproof paper and the apparatus will work successfully. I prefer, however, to
make the outer cylinder, form, or casing A, as well as the core or inner form or cylinder B, of sheet metal, which may be of the thinnest kind. C indicates a lock used to secure the two edges of the sheet-metal cylinders A and B together. I do not, however, wish to be limited to the use of the locks shown, as any other form may be substituted as desired without altering the spirit of my invention. D indicates the ordinary construction of funnel that is removably seated in the outer cylinder A. The leading feature of my invention, however, consists in the provision of the device for temporarily holding the two cylinders A and B spaced apart while the mold is being filled and consists of cross-arms E, having the downwardly-extending vertical arms F with their ends slightly tapered, as shown at G. \ ders until the plastic material has been poured in. Then the arms are withdrawn with a tamping or churning motion, thus serving to settle the plastic material in the mold.
The top of the core-cylinder is covered by an inverted-cone-shaped lid or cover H, which may be separate from the cross-arms E or may be secured thereto, as shown in the drawings, by means of a threaded rod I, that extends through a hole J in the apex of the cover and has secured thereto a handle K. The edge of the cover II is notched, as shown at L, to receive cross-arms E.
In operation the mold is filled after being assembled as shown in the drawings. After the mold has been filled the spacing device, consisting of the vertical arms F and their connections, is withdrawn, as stated, with a tamping or churning motion to settle 0r puddle the contents of the mold, the funnel D removed, and the contents of the mold allowed to dry. After partially or completely drying the locks C on the core-cylinder B are unfastened and the core removed. The locks C on the outer cylinder A are then unfastened and the cylinder removed.
It will be understood that a number of cylinders A and B may be provided, but that only one funnel and spacing device will be required for each workman. It will also be understood that my improvement is applicable to molding other forms of plastic products such as building-blocks, by altering the relative positions of the vertical arms F so as to space the molds apart.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1.;In a molding apparatus, a casing and a core, and a device for spacing said casing and core apart consisting of a number of vertical arms to seat between them, said vertical arms approximating in length the length of said casing and core, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a molding apparatus, outer and inner forms and a device for spacing said forms apart comprising cross-arms to seat on the top of the inner form, and downwardly-extending vertical arms secured to said crossarms, said vertical arms approximating in length the length of said outer and inner forms, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a molding apparatus, outer and inner forms, a funnel secured to the outer form, and a spacing device consisting of cross-arms and downwardly-extending vertical arms se- ICO cured thereto to seat between said forms, said Vertical arms approximating in length the length of said outer and inner forms, and having their lower ends tapered, substantially as shown and described.
