Description
No. 838,892. PATENTED DEC. 18, 1906; J. W. PAGE. EXOAVATING'SGOOP.
APPLICATION FILED SEPT: 8.1906.
TINTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EXCAVATlNG-SCOOP- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed September 8, 1906. Serial No. 333,780.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. PAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Excavating-Scoops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in excavating-scoops, and is fully described and explained in this specification, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device, and Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A is a suitable shovel having a cutting edge at its forward end, and said shovel is pivotally secured to and supported by a supporting-bail B, the pivotal connection between the parts being behind the center of gravity of the shovel. Across the top of the shovel A extend two bridges A A which act as supports for a longitudinally-eXtending track C, preferably centrally disposed with respect to the sides of the shovel. This track is longitudinally slotted, as illustrated in the drawings, and preferably extends upward and backward from the front end of the shovel, asillustrated. IVithin the slot of the track runs a roller upon a hanger D, which hanger carries at its free end a' sheave, over which passes a hauling-rope E, running to a suitable windingdrum. The supporting-bail B carries a sheave B, over which runs a holding-rope F, which connects the hanger D with the track C, preferably at the rear end thereof, the rope being of such length that when the hanger is held forward in the position shown in Fig. 1 the shovel will be in a horizontal position.
The operation of my device will be appar ent from the description thereof. In eXcavating the shovel is dragged through the material to be operated upon by means of a hauling-rope, and when filled is swung to the desired position. When it is desired to dump the shovel, the tension upon this rope is released, and the weight of the shovel causes it to swing downward, the hanger running up the track to permit such movement.
I realize that considerable variation is possible in the details of this construction without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I do not intend therefore to limit myself to the specific form herein shown and described.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination with a shovel having a cutting edge at its forward end and a supporting-bail pivoted thereto behind the center of gravity thereof, of a sheave on the supporting-bail, a rigid device secured to the shovel at its forward end and movable relatively with respect thereto, under the influence of a suitable hauling-rope, and means of connection whereby the movement of said rigid device determines the position of the shovel.
2. The combination with a suitable shovel having a cutting edge at its forward end and a supporting-bail pivoted thereto behind the center of gravity thereof, of a sheave on the supporting-bail, the longitudinally-movable hanger on the shovel, a rope running from the hanger over the sheave and connected to a point on the shovel in front of the pivot thereof, and means of connection between the hanger and a suitable source of power.
3. The combination with a suitable shovel having a cutting edge at its forward end and a supporting-bail pivoted thereto behind the center of gravity thereof, of a longitudinallyextending track on the shovel, the hanger movably supported by said track, means for exerting tension on the hanger and a rope running from the hanger over the sheave on the supporting-bail and secured to the shovel in front of its pivot.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, this 5th day of September, A. D. 1906.
L. HEIsLAR, J. H. LANDES.
