Description

PATENTED DEC. 18, 1906.
W. CLEMENT. SPLICE FOR WIRE FENCES. APPLIOATION FILED APR. 9, 190a.
s cm. WASHINGTON. 0. c4
UNITED STATIE WALTER CLEMENT, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN.
SPLICE FOR WIRE FENCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed April 9,1906. Serial No. 310,679.
To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, county of Lenawee, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Splices for l/Vire Fences, of which the following is a specification, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object certain new and useful improvements in a splice for wire fence, illustrated in the accompanying drawings; and it consists of the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, and illustrated in the drawings submitted herewith, in which Figure 1 is a view in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a view in longitudinal section. Fig. 3 1s a view in longitudinal section on the line 3 3, Fig. 2, the same being at right angles to the sectional view shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view in cross-section on the line 4 4, Fig. 2, illustrating a modification in the construction of the tubular sleeve or thimble.
The desirability of a simple, economical, and eflicient means of splicing wires for fences is well understood.
I carry out my invention as follows: In the drawings, a and I) represent the adjacent extremities of two wires to be spliced, and 0 represents a thimble or sleeve, the same being constructed with an orifice therethrough, as shown, the extremities being flared or tapered, as indicated at d and e. The extremities of the wire in the completed splice are bent over to form eyes, (indicated at f and g, respectively,) the construction of the sleeve or thimble being such that the adjacent eyes of the wires may be drawn into the tapered or flared extremities of the sleeve or thimble, as shown herewith. To effect a splicing of the wiresas when one reel of wire has been exhausted, for example-one of the thimbles or sleeves c is slipped over the terminal end of the wire of the one reel, after which the extremity of the wire is bent over to form a corresponding eye. The end of the wire on the other reel, for example, is then slipped also through the orifice of the thimble or sleeve and its extremity bent to form a corresponding eye, and then the two extremities with their eyes are drawn in opposite directions, bringing the two eyes into the corresponding tapered orifices of the thimble or sleeve at opposite ends of the said sleeve or thimble. It will readily be seen that the more tense the strain becomes the more firmly are the extremities of the wires bound within the orifice of the sleeve. The extremities of the wires being formed with eyes, there is no liability whatever of the eyes being pulled out or straightened out. The eyes of each wire bind against the wall of the tapered orifice of the sleeve. The orifice through the sleeve at the intermediate portion thereof may simply be of required diameter to admit the passage of the two wires therethrough. If desired, the orifice through the tubular splice or sleeve might be constructed at each end of the sleeve with an oblong groove, (indicated at i,) to receive the bent ends of the wires; but I do not limit myself solely to such a construction.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. A splice for wire fence comprising in combination two wires, and a tubular sleeve constructed in a single integral piece provided with an orifice therethrough flared at its outer extremities, the adjacent extremities of the wires being bent to form eyes or loops, said eyes or loops being drawn into the flaring ends of the orifice of the sleeve.
2. A splice for wire fence comprising in combination two wires, and a tubular sleeve constructed in a single integral piece provided with an orifice therethrough flared at its outer extremities, the adjacent extremities of the wire being bent to form eyes or loops, said wires overlapped intermediate the extremities of the sleeve, said eyes or loops being drawn into the flaring ends of the orifice of the sleeve and bearing against the walls of the corresponding flared ends of the orifice.
3. In combination a tubular sleeve for splicing wire fence constructed in a single integral piece provided with an orifice therethrough flared at its extremities, and wires bent attheir ends to form tapering eyes or loops, said wires overlapped intermediate the l specification in the presence of two subscribextremities of the sleeve, the outer surfaces ing Witnesses.
of the loops pressing against the inner Walls I of the flared extremities of said orifices, WALTER CLEMENT j 5 thereby preventing the Wires from being Witnesses:
drawn through the sleeve. J. N. SAMPSON,
In testimony whereof I have signed this E. H. GRIFFIN.
