UNITED y STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. LEHRMANN, JR., OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR TO GEORGE GRANT, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
SAWNIILL LOG-DOG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 11, 1906.
Application filed May 11,1906. Serial No. 316,366-
To r/JZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN FREDERICK LEHRMANN, Jr., a citizen of the United States of America, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawmill Log Dogs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in a sawmill log-dog, and its novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings; and the objects of my invention are to provide a log-dog that can be readily adjusted in case of a breakdown and the broken dog or part thereof removed and a new one placed upon the carrier in a summary manner. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l shows side view of dog. Fig. 2 shows left-hand lug or jaw. Fig. 8 shows right-hand lug or j aw. Fig. 4 is an under side view of the dog, and Fig. 5 is a side elevation thereof.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In said drawings, I designates a steel slide or carrier, at the sides of which the pair of angular jaws 1 and 2 are arranged. Each `aw consists of an upwardly-extending wall l) and a horizontal part having a dovetailed tenon S tapering longitudinally, as shown by dottedlines in Fig. 4, and fitting into a corresponding groove or mortise in the bottom of carrier I. Each jaw 2 is in one piece and its raised part b is provided with a hole through which a dowel-pin d passes into a registering recess of said carrier, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, to fasten the jaw to said carrier. The lower part of said carrier is provided with a pair of parallel downwardly-extending lugs 5, leaving a groove 6 between them, in which a blockliis fastened by transverse dowel-pins d. A chain c engages or is provided with a link c', surrounding the said block. The ull on 5o this chain applied by any suitable mec anism or in any suitable way draws along the dog and the log which it holds.
If either jaw be broken or otherwise injured, it can be removed by pulling out the dowel-pin and sliding the tapering tenon S longitudinally out of its mortise. Another jaw may then be put in its place by sliding the tenon into the mortise and setting the pin. There is no need to disturb any other part ofthe dog.
Any ordinary construction of the inner log-holding faces of said raised walls?) may be used. The tops of said walls are preferably inclined from end to end, as shown in Fig. 5.
The carrier I, which constitutes the body of my improved log-dog, is subjected to very little strain and may be used with a succession of jaws.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
l. A sawmill log-dog consisting of a carrier and a pair of jaws at the sides thereof, each jaw being attached to said carrier by a tapering mortise-and-tenon connection and provided with additional detachable means of fastening for the purpose set forth.
2. A sawmill log-dog consisting of jaws, one on either side, having dovetail engagement with a carrier, the latter being secured to a carrying-chain substantially as set forth.
8. In a sawmill log-dog, a carrier having a groove in its under part, in combination with a block fastened in said groove alink engaging said block, means for drawing 0n said link and a pair of jaws arranged at the sides of the carrier, each jaw consisting of a raised part provided with means for fastening it to said carrier and a horizontal part having on its upper side a longitudinally-tapering dovetailed tenon which fits a correspondinglyformed mortise in the under side of the carrier substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
