Beit known that I, ETHAN I. DoDDs, a citizen of the United States, residingat Pullman, in. the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and. useful following is a specification.

Cars of this class are subjected to rough treatment and quickly become broken and worn out unless carefully handled, the exused in mines, &c., amounting to about twenty-five per. cent. per year of the total value of, the cars.
The object of my invention is to produce a metal car of this class which shall be simple is'a side elevation of the same.

The car as herein illustratedhas vertical front and rear walls, one of which is constituted by a hinged door, and sloping or flaring side walls, although such particular c0nformation of the walls is ,not of the essence of the invention. The vertical corners of the car at the closed end are united and reinforced by means of channels 1 2, F1g. 3, that are brought to the required shapejby bending the web to rectangular form to fit the corners, as clearly shown in plan view, Fig. 1. The sidesof the car are reinforced against lateral pressure by means of side'stakes 13, which are formed, preferably,by a flangedrolled member cut on the bias through its web. The lower ends of the side stakes 13 are secured toan angular member 14, that is To further reinforce the car against longitudinal strains and thrusts an angle-bar, (denoted by 1 6,) bent into substantially semicir cular form, is provided at each end of the This bar is secured at its central point 9,-while its ends are riveted to the ends of the angles 10. The members 16 thus perform the office of bumpers, distributing the longitudinal shocks and strains through both the central longitudinal bar 9 and the parallel angles 10 on either side thereof.
To the door 8 are riveted hinge members 17, that extend, preferably, the full height of the door for purposes of lateral reinforcement, as shown in Fig. 4, said hinge members being hung at their upper ends on a horizontal hinge-pintle 18, mounted at its ends in brackets 19, secured to the upper ends of the .side walls.
To the upper face of the bar9 at the closed end of the car is secured a coupling-hook 20, and to the opposite end is secured a combined hook and staple 21, adapted to be en'- gaged by a section of chain 22 for coupling purposes.
My invention, also comprehends a simple and easily-manipulated form of door-loc k,- thesame comprising a rod or bar 23, mounted to oscillate in bearings 24, secured to the front face of the door at its lower end, said rod havingan offset portion 23* formed at its center between the bearings 24 and having also downwardly-bent ends 23 overlying the sides of the buffers 16. This rod is so disposed that when thrown into locking position by swinging downwardly one or both ends 23 the central ofl'set 23 engages the rear end of the coupler-hook 21, which latter forms a stop preventing the o ening of the door., In order to release the cor when the load is discharged, as by raising the closed end of the car, it is necessary only to raise one of the depending arms 23*, which can be easily done by a mere kick of the operator, which frees the lower end of the door and al lows it to swing open.
This atent is intended to embrace only so much oi the disclosure made herein as is covered by the claims.
I claim' 1. A metal car ot the class described comprising a horizontal bottom wall, a vertical end wall, inclined side walls, and a vertical swinging door closing one end, all of said parts being made of metal plates united and reinforced by rolled beams'riveted thereto, substantially as described.
2. A car of the class described having in combination a draft-bar disposed coincident with the major axis of the car and having its ends projecting beyond the car-body, and buffers in the form. of bent angles united .to the ends of said draft-bar, substantially as described.
3. A metal car of the class described having, in combination with a body formed of metal plates united and reinforced by rolled beams, a draft-bar disposed coincident with the major axis of the car and having its ends projecting beyond the ends of the carbody, and bufie-rs in the form of bent angles united to the ends of said draft-bar, substantially as described.
4; A metal car of the classdescribed comprising a body formed of metal plates united at their meeting edges by angle-irons, in combination with a draft-bar disposed coincident with the major axis of the car and projecting at its ends beyond the end Walls of the car, and bufiers-irrthe form of bent angles secured at their centers to the ends of said draft-bar and connected at their ends to the ends of the angles uniting the bottom and side walls, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a metal car-body of the class described, of a hinged door closing one end of said car-body, said door being swung from 'its upper end, a locking-bar having an oii'set portion journaled on said door transversely of the ciir, and a stop adapted to be engaged by the offset portion of said locking-bar to maintain the door closed, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a metal car-body having one end thereof formed by a door hinged at its upper end, of a locking-bar pivotally mounted upon and parallel with the lower free margin of said door, said bar having an intermediate offset portion and a depending arm at one end, anda stop adapted to be engaged. and disengaged by the offset portion of said bar to lock and release the door, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a metal-(nir-body of the class described, having one end thereof formed by a door hinged at :itsn .per margin, of a draftrbar extending longitu' inallyiof the car and projecting beyond the ends of the lattencouplinghooks secured upon theends of said bar, and a centrallv oifset lockin bar pivoted uponand coincident with the ower margin ofsaid door, the offset portion of said bar engaging therear end of oneof said coupling-hooks to therebyjock the door in closed position, substantially as described.
