To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DORA O. McHUcH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lorain, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Clasp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to clasps, and particularly to those applicable to the securing of shoe-ties. Its principal objects are to provide a neat, convenient, and secure clasp for such urposes.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in WlllGll similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe having one embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 shows the clasp, enlarged, in side elevation, arts being broken away and in section; and Figs. 3 and 4 are transverse sections on the lines 3 3 and 4 4, respectively, of Fig. 2.

My improved invention comprises outer members 10, which in the present instance are of semicylindrical form. The members are hinged to one another upon adj acent edges at 11, there being any convenient number of these hinges employed. The clasp has an inner cylinder or linin consisting, of sections 12 12, carried by en walls 13 and interior connectin -walls 14. At the center of the clasp each ining-section is provided with a curved depression furnished by concave or convex portions 15 of the lining. These at their convex sides extend outwardly into proximity with the outer members.

The space between the outer member and its lining thus serves to contain the depressed portion of the latter, maintaining a continuous surface over the exterior of the member.

" The halves of the clasp may be separably secured to one another at the edges opposite the hinges by one or more catches, each furnished by a spring 16, attached to the inside of one of the members and extending through registering openings 17 in the walls 14. At its free end each spring has an opening 18 for cooperation with a projection 19 from the inner side of the companion section. The catches may be operated to release them by a rounded projection 20, which is accessible through an opening 21 in the member to which the spring is attached.

In using the clasp the catches are disengaged and the halves opened, so that one of them may be inserted beneath the tie-T of a shoe where it extends between the outer eyelets and is knotted. This knotted portion rests in the depression 15 of the under member, While the ties pass from it throu h the lining-sections. clasp is then pressed down upon the tie, so that its catches are engaged. The diameter of the interior is such that the tie and knot are both grasped between the sections, and thus firmly held against displacement. To release the clasp from the tie, one simply presses upon the projections 20, when the upper half may be raised and the knot untied. This entirely frees the clasp. From this it will be seen that the device may be readily applied and furnishes a secure fastening. Moreover, it is symmetrical and inconsplcuous and, if desired, may be made of more or less ornamental appearance and of precious metals.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A shoe-tie clasp, consisting of two semicylindrical sections, hinged together and each havin a lining spaced therefrom and connecte therewitheby end walls and interior walls, the linings of the sections having corresponding curved depressions at the middle of their length and the interior connectingwalls having re istering openings, and springcatches secure to the inner face of the section at the free end thereof, projecting through the openings of the interior connecting-walls, and engaging projections on the other section.

The shoe-tie clasp herein described con sisting of two members hinged together at one edge and consisting each of an outer casing and a lining spaced apart therefrom and extending throughout the length of the casing, the lining members being connected at their ends with the ends of the casing members and provided midway between their ends with corresponding depressions within the space between said sections and their respective casings, and fastenings consisting of springs secured to one of the members between the casing and lining sections thereof and provided at their free ends with means for engagement with the other section and with outwardly-projecting devices whereby the said fastening may be released all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
