. will furmsh information such as the public desires with reference to the directions, distances, locations of roads, &c., and one that will furnish an excellent means of advertising.

The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section.

According to our invention we provide a pole or mast of steel tubing which has a lower portion A, provided with a base B, set in the ound to prevent the mast from settlin he up er portion of the mast is preferab y tapere to give it a more ornamental or attractive appearance, and we preferably accomplish t is tapering by making it of a plurality of sections A, A, A, A, and A of gradually-decreasing diameter, these sections being connected by reducing-couplings C C, &c. To each sectlon A A &c., 1s secured a flag, wing, or vane D, which is free to rotate about the section to which it is secured, so as to be moved by the wind and which is designed to bear any suitable or attractive advertising matter. By the use of a device such as described the advertisements need not be limited in number or size, as we may place as many flags on the pole as we deslre by making it longer or shorter, and the flags may be made of any desired size. By arran ing them so that they always swing with t e wind the wind resistance is reduced to a minimum, and there is no danger of the sign being blown down or destroyed. Further, both sides of the signs will be displa 'ed and will be always observed by the trave ing public whose attention will be called to them by the fact that the si s indicate the direction of the wind and will furnish all information that the traveling public desires in reference to directions, distances, locations of road, &c.

Having thus described our invention,what we claim 1s 1. In combination, a mast consisting of a pluralit of sections of different sizes connected y reducing-couplings and a flag pivotally connected to each section, substantially as described. 1

2. In combination, a mast or pole consisting of a lower portion, a series of sections gradually reducing in size, reducing-coupm s connecting said sections to eac other an to the lower portion, a flag or vane for each section having straps encircling said section, the lower strap being seated upon the reducing-coupling, substantial] as described.
