PIANO-ACTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that l, LEO H. BATTALIA, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Piano-Actions, of which the Jfollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an action for upright pianos which is of simple construction and responds quickly to the touch.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of my improved action, showing the normal position oi' the parts. Fig. 2 is a similar view of portion oi the action, showing the position of the parts aiter the key has been depressed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the hook and base.
A notch 4, of the hammer-butt 5, is engaged by the beak 6 of a hook 7. This hook is hinged at 8 to a base 9, secured to jack 10. Base 9 has a longitudinal slot 11, engaged by a screw 12, tapped into jack 10, and bymeans oi which the relative position between jack and base, and consequently between jack and hook, may be regulated. The body of the hook is adapted to engage a regulating-button 13 on the bumper 14, thus constituting a back check. A spring 15, connecting hook 7 with a lug 16 of base 9, tends to throw the hook normally forward-fi.. e., against button 13.
When the key 17 is depressed, the hook will by button 13 be projected into notch 4 of hammer-butt 5 while' the jack is withdrawn, Fig. 2. While repeating, the hook will be vibrated on its pivot 8 and cause the jack to be rapidly swung into and out of engagement with the butt.
