To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HARRY LUTHER YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pueblo, in the county of Pueblo and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Railway-Switch Construction, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to railway-switches, and particularly to those of city or suburban roads, the movable element or switch-point of which is apt to become clogged or impeded by the accumulation of dirt and other debris.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a rigid, durable, and efficient sup port for the movable switch-point and one which will be self-cleaningthat is, will be automatically cleaned by the movement of the switch-point in its normal operation. My construction prevents the accumulation of dirt, 620., both beneath the movable switch-point and also at its sides.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the railway-switch. Fig. 2 is a detail showing the attachment of the operating-rod to the switch-points. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detached view in perspective of the point-support and rail. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the supporting-chair,- and Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the complete structure,
showing also a pit for the reception of the dirt or debris.
Referring to the drawings, A is a switchrail having an upright tread portion a, arranged in alinement with and adapted to form a continuation of the track-rail B. Switch rail Ahas also abase portion a, adapted to support the movable switch-point C, pivoted at c, and is provided with bolt-holes a or other suitable means for attachment to its supporting guard or chair D. This guard or chair D is spiked to the cross-ties E and forms massive and rigid support for the switch.
Base portion a of switch-rail A is slotted, as at a to receive the operating-rod c, which is pivotally connected to the switch point or points 0 by pin a and provided at one end with any suitable means 0 for attachment to the switch-actuating devices. (Not shown.)
"In Figs. 1 and 2 I have shown two movable switch-points for a single switch; but it will be understood that this is not essential, as only one may be employed, if preferred.
In order to prevent accumulation of dirt about the switch-points, I provide the base portion a of switch-rail A with a set of slots or openings a, preferably arranged transversely and having a flat substantial strip a between them for the efficient support of switch-point C. These strips a being flat will wear for a long time. In order to prevent clogging at the sides of the switch-point by dirt which fails to drop through the base slots or openings w, I provide the upright tread portion a also with a set of openings a, which are staggered with relation to openings a and each one is opposite one of the flat strips a so that dirt which is pushed laterally along the flat strips a will pass out of openings a and will not impede the movement of the switch-point. Openings a may be archshaped, as shown, or they mav have any desired shape.
The guard or chair D is provided with base-openings d, which register with openings a of switch-rail A and has guard-flanges (1 d Between these flanges and switch-rail A a space d isallowed through which dirt may pass from said switch-rail A. Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with discharge-openings and having a lateral flange, said lateral flange being provided with. discharge-openings staggered with relation to said supporting-base openings, substantially as described.
2. In a railway-switch structure, the coinbination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with dis charge-openings with substantially flat supporting portions therebetween, a lateral flange for said base provided with dischargeopenings staggered with relation to said base openings and op osite said supporting portions, substantia ly as described.
3. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with discharge-openings and having an upright raildescribed. I
5. Ina railway-switch structure,- the combination with a switch-point-supporting base provided with discharge-openings and having a lateral flange also provided with dischargeopenings, a switch-point pivoted for move ment upon said supporting-base and an operating-rod pivotally connected to said switchpoint, said supporting-base being provided with a channel to receive said rod, substantially as described.
6. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with dischargeopenings and having an upright tread-flange also provided with dischargeopenings, and a chair for said supportingbase provided with discharge-openings to cooperate With said supporting-base and tread.- flange openings, substantially as described.
7. In a railway-switch structure, the com bination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with discharge-openings and having an upright railtread portion also provided with dischargeopenings, and a chair having a flange formed to engage and brace said upright rail-tread portion, said chair being formed with openings to cooperate with said discharge-openings, substantially as described.
8. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with discharge-openings and having an upright railtread portion also provided with dischargeopenings, and a chair having a flange formed at one side to engage and brace said upright rail-tread portion and a second flange at the other side to constitute a guard-rail, said chair being formed with openings to cooperate with said discharge-openings, substan tially as described.
9. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with discharge-openings and having a lateral treadflange also provided with discharge-openings, and a chair formed with a set of openings registering with said base-openings and another set registering with said tread-flange openings, substantially as described.
10. In a railway-switch structure, the combination with a movable switch-point, of a supporting-base therefor provided with dischargeopenings and having a tread-flange, said tread-flange being provided with dis charge-openings staggered with relation to said. supporting-base openings, and a chair formed with one or more upright flanges and with discharge-openings registering with said base and tread-flange openings, substantially as described.
