To all whom, it may concern:

. Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DENNIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Troy, in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in brushes.

The prime object of the invention is to provide in a brush a back having a flat surface from which extends flanged rojections, the flanges being embedded in .a ayer of plastic material applied to the flat surface to hold the'two elements together. The butt-ends of the bristles of the brush are also embedded in the plastic material, and when the latter sets a strong and durable article is produced.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my improved brush in a press and ready to be removed and finished. Fig. 2 is a side elevation ofthe brush.

The same numerals indicate like parts in both the figures.

1 represents a back having a fiat surface 2 on one side, and extending outwardly from this surface are a series of projections 3, provided with flanges 3 A layer of plastic material 4 is applied to the flat surface 2, and the flanges 3 are embedded in said material to fasten it to the back. The bristles 5 are also held in place by spreading and embedding their butts-ends in the opposite surface of the plastic material, afiording a cheap and convenient manner of assembling and holding the bristles in position.

Obviously when the plastic material becomes hard it prevents the projections pulling out and also prevents the bristles falling out. Inasmuch as the plastic material is in a semiliquid state when it is applied, it readily fills in the spaces around the projections and flows in between the butt-ends of the bristles, and to further make the connection more substantial pressure is applied to the parts when they are assembled, as shown in Fig. 1.

he invention is extremely simple and by providing a layer of plastic material held in position by flanged projections intermediate the bristles and the back considerable expense is saved'in the manufacture of the brush.

What I claim is- A brush comprising a back, flanged proj ections extendingfrom one face thereof, lastic material applied to the said face, and aving the flanges on the projections embedded therein, and bristles having their butts embedded in said plastic material.
