YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
GASZTING BRASS OR OTHER COPPER ALLOYS INTO- METALLIC MOLDS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J 111 1.17, 1906.
Application filed September 5, 1905. Serial No. 276.966.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. FOWLER, a
Youngstown, county of Mahonin and State of OhlO, have invented a new an useful Improvement in Processes of Casting Brass or other Copper Alloys into a Metallic Mold, of
principle of the invention ein herein explained and the best mode in w 'ch I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relates to processes of casting molten metal into a metallic mold, and particularly to castin brass or other copper alloys into a steel'mo d.
My said invention consists of that part or steps of such process which involves the treatception of the molten brass or other copper alloy, hereinafter fully described, and particularly set forth in the claims. The following description sets forth in detail one mode of carrying out the invention, such disclosed mode constituting but one of various ways in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In'the app ication of my improved procsteel, preferably iron, mold in such a manner as to prevent any uniting orpenetrating action from taking place between the molten metal and the iron of the mold, thereb premold and. permitting its ready separation cool and ready for removal. I effect this result by produc ing a covering of borates en the interior of the mold, and this is done by treating the incompound in dilute liqu 1d solution, such as will produce such borates; This solution may be applied by dipping, washing, or in any desired manner, and I have found the use of z dilute liquid solution of bora-cic acid to effeciing the required action. I have found that this boracic-acid solutionwhen so ap plied has a great penetrating effect upon the: iron or steel mold and most thoroughly afl rates do not combine chemically or amalga mate with the brass or other co per alloys, are indestructible by heat as We 1 as insoluble, and form an effectual barrier to the union of the mold with the molten metal. uid form of the applied boracic acid permits a comparatively very small amount thereof to be used, so that the interior of the mold preserves its smooth hard finish and imparts the same hysical characteristics ofsmoothness to t e casting. In this manner any number of castings may be made in the same mold. The castings are comparatively smooth and require a minimum application of further labor of machining and finishing.
Having thus described my invention in de tal, that which I particularly point -out and distinctly claim as my invention is 1. In the process of casting brass or other similar copper alloys into a metallic mold, that step which consists in subjecting the interior of the mold to the chemical action .ofa compound of boron such as will form borates.
2. In th process of casting brass or other similar copper alloys into a metallic mold,
that step which consists in subjecting the in- I terior of the mold to the chemical action of boracic acid.
3. In the process of casting brass or similar copper alloys into a metallic mold, that step which consists in subjecting the interior of themold to the chemical action of boracic acid in liquid solution.
4. In the recess of casting brass or similar copper a loys into a metallic mold, that step which consists'in subjecting the interior of the mold to the chemical action of iboracic' acid in dilute liquid solution.
Signed by me this 26th day of August,
1905. j JOHN E. FOWLER. Attest:
