IMPROVEMENT IN VISES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat I, ORLANDO V. FLORA, of Madison, in the'county-of Jefferson, and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Parallel Vises; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, refer-'- ence'being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of vises known asfsliding parallel," and the improvement consists'in attaching the parallel bars to :rvertical-mortised post, by means of pins, the said poet-sliding on a plain, smooth locking-bar.
"Figure 1 is a perspective of the vise.
Figure 2 is a sectional View of the nut and screw.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bed or frame of the vise. D is the loose jaw, andE the fast jaw or bench-leg. The parallel bars,- 13 and G, are hinged or pivoted, by means of the pins 02 and e, to the sliding post G, this post, with the jaw D and parallel bars 33 and O, forming a rectangular frame, with three'loose articulated corners, d, e, andf, while the fourth is formed by the screw 9 and nut F.
The upper parallel bar, B, passes through mortis'es in the jaws D and E, and has a thread cut on its end,
i which engages with an internal thread in the nut F.
The plate a is attached to the nut F, and serves as a' flange .for the hook-bolt b to catch over, by which means the nut is kept up to the jaw D, as shown. I
J is the locking-bar, rigidly attached at each end to the front legs of the bench; This bar passes through a mortise in the post G, the said post sliding thereon. This post is provided with bands or strips, cc, of metal,
which bear upon the bar J, when the vise is screwed up, and prevent the cutting or wearing of the wood around the mortise in the post.
The bar J may be made of hard wood, but metal is preferable.
When nothing is clamped in the vise, the jaw D may be drawn out or pushed in, at pleasure, but when any article is placed between the jaws, as shown, one turn of the nut will-be suflicient to clamp it firmly, as this operation throws the post G out of the vertical plane, and brings the strips 0 c in contact with the bar Land the friction is su'tlicient to keepthem from slipping, thus locking the post fast to the bar.
This vise is so constructed as a whole that'it mayQbe placed under the end of a work'-bench, as shown in red lines, and thus be a complete article of manufacture initsclf. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination of the post G and bars 13 C with the locking-bar J, constructed and operating in connection with the movable jaw D, substantially as' and for the purposes herein specified.
ORLANDO v. FLORA.
