HOE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
Application filed January 4,1906. Serial No. 294,615.
To QM whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM A. SPARKS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Par kersburg, in the county of l/Vood and State of Vest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in hoes, and has for its object to provide a tool of this nature upon which difl'erent sizes and styles of blades may be used and which will be simple in construction and cheap of manufacture, as well as strong and durable.
The invention consists of the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims concluding this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the hoe. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view thereof and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are detailed views of the blade, shanlepiece, and washer, respectively.
l/Vhile the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings and its construction is described in this specification, the right is reserved to make such changes from the construction shown and described herein as the scope of the claims hereto appended will permit.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, in carrying out my invention I provide the blade 1, which may be of any shape and thickness, with a large perforation 2 and a small perforation 8. The large perforation is adapted to fit around the screw-threaded shank 4 of the-shank-piece 5, which is also provided with an extending flange 6. Said shank is arranged at an oblique angle with the flange to give the blade the proper inclination relative to the handle. Said flange is provided with a small perforation 7 of the same size as adapted to register with the small perforation in the blade.
The socket-piece 8 for the handle is tapered on the inside, whereby the handle is securely retained in place therein. Said socket-piece is screw-threaded to receive the shank of the shank-piece and is provided with a socket 9 on the outside, whereby it may be gripped by a spanner-wrench to tighten it upon said shank.
Interposed between the socket-piece and the blade is a washer 10, which is of equal diameter as the flange of the shank-piece, thereby strengthening the blade gripped between them. The opposite faces of said washer are beveled with relation to each other, one to engage the blade and the other the socket-piece. Said washer carries a pin or lug 1 1, preferably made in a separate piece and adapted to engage the perforation 3 in the blade and perforation 7 in the flange of the shank-piece. Said pin is so placed that when the socket-piece is screwed down 011 the shank said socketiece will extend over the head of the pin an hold it in place. The pin serves to lock the blade in proper position and prevents it from turning on the shank.
I claim 1. A hoe comprising a blade, a shank-piece to which said blade is secured, said shankpiece having a screw-threaded shank, and a socket-piece having a continuous socket extending therethrough, one end of said socket being screw-threaded to engage said shank and the other end thereof tapered and smaller at the end farther from the blade to receive and clamp a handle therein.
2. A hoe comprising a blade having a large and a small perforation therein, a shank-piece having a shank extending through the large perforation in said blade, a socket-piece secured to a handle and engaging said shank, and a beveled washer interposed between said socket-piece and blade, said washer carrying a pin engaging the smaller perforation in the blade.
3. A hoe comprising a blade having a large and a small perforation therein, a shank-piece having a shank and an extending flanged ar ranged at an oblique angle with each other, said flange provided with a perforation registering with the small perforation in the blade, said shank extending through the large perforation in said blade, a socket-piece secured to a handle and engaging said shank, and a beveled washer interposed between said socket-piece and blade, said washer carrying a pin engaging the small perforation in the blade and the perforation in the flange of the shank-piece.
4. A hoe comprising a blade having a large and a small perforation therein, a shank-piece having a shank extending through the large hold the latter in place While assembling the perforation in said blade,- a socket-piece separts of the hoe.
cured to a handle and engaging said shank, In testimony whereof I affiX my signature and a Washer interposed between'said socketin presence of two Witnesses.
piece and blade, said Washer carrying a pin WILLIAM A. SPARKS. made in a separate piece and adapted to engage the small perforation in the blade, said socket-piece engaging the head of said pinto Witnesses: 4 W. P. KINGsBURY, JAMEs F. ALEXANDER.
