Description
THOMAS E. WOOD, OF KNOXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN ELASTIC ROOFING COMPOSITIONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 82,507,
dated September 29, 1868.
T0 all whom it may conce/ru.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS E. VVooD, of Knoxville, in the county of Tioga and State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Elastic Roofing; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference bring had to the accompanying drawings, firming part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to improvements in rooting; and consists in the construction of roofs of the compound which will be hereinafter described, when the same is applied in the manner which will be more fullyshown on reference tothe accompanying drawings, wherein is shown a sectional view of a roof composed of the several constituent parts or chemical elements constituting my invention, and applied in the manner which I have found best adapted to the same.
A represents the portion of a building to be covered. B rel'rlesents the strips of fclting, as commonly used for rooting purposes, laid on in the following` manner: the eaves, the first sheet is folded under about one-third of its breadth, the second laid on with its lower edge even with the eave, and projecting above the upper edge of the first about one-third its breadth, and the third Oommencing at I sheet commencing with its lower edge laid one-third its breadth above the eaves, so that all parts of the roof are covered with three thicknesses of felt, the whole being laid in hot cement and fastened to the roof by strips of wood or tin laid on at proper distances apart, and secured with nails. I then cover the whole with the elastic compound, prepared as follows: One part asphaltum to six parts gastar, to he heated boiling hot; then add tive parts clean sand, one part boiled plaster, and one part common paint, to be mixed to the consistency of mortar, and while het spread on with a trowel from one fourth to one-half inch in thickness, which constitutes, as I have found in practice, a very durable elastic roof ing material, which is not liable to crack after it has become hard, or to be affected by the heat of the sun in warm weather.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is*
The elastic rooting composition made of the ingredients and in the proportions herein specified, compounded and applied in the manner set forth.
THOMAS E. WOOD.
