Along the remaining portions of the lower edges of the side lates there are provided inturned flan 'es, t e tapered bottom plate being fastened to the outstandin flanges of the angle-bars and to the intu'rne flan es of the side plates. At the upper ed es the side plates are riveted other anglears with outwardly-extended flanges, to which is secured the top plate of the bolster.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and wherein like reference characters refer to like parts, I have illustrated two embodiments of my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a truckbolster embodying my invention, the same having integral inturned flanges along por tions of the lower edges of its side plates. Fig. 2 is a lon itudinal section of both the body and true bolsters, each with integral inturned flanges. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end view ofboth bolsters. Fig. 4: is a central transverse section of both bolsters, the combined spacer and king-pin bearing members being partly broken away. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a truck-bolster having inturned flanges along the lower edges of its side plates, the flanges comprising angle-bars riveted to said side plates. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section of both the body and truck bolster involving the features shown in Fi 5. Fi .7 is an enlarged end view of both boI- sters s own in Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a central transverse section of both bolsters.
Referring first to Fi s. 1, 2, 3, and 4, it
will be seen that the b0 ster has two bellied side plates 10 10, to which are attached at the central portion of their lower edges the comparatively short angle-bars 11 11, having outwardly-extended flan es, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 4. n the intermed1- ate mclined and horizontal end portions of the lower edges of the side plates are integral inturned flanges 12 1-2, the bottom plate 13, which is broadest at its central part and tapers toward its ends, being secured, by means of rivets to these outwardly and inwardly extended flanges. Along the upper edges of the side plates are provided angle bars 14, which are riveted to the side plates with their flanges extended outwardly, the
top plate 15 being riveted to these flanges, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. The top plate and the up er angle-bars extend substantially the whole len th of the body-bolster, while the corresponiing parts for the truckbolster extend only a ortion of the length thereof, as will be clear y evident from an in- 'spection of Figs. 1 and 2. To space apart and at the same time secure to ether the side plates, I rovide at the ends 0? the body-bolster the ish-shaped members 16, which are riveted to the sides and bottom, the rivets also passing through the upper angle-bars and the lower inturned flanges. For the truck-bolster I employ two dish-shaped members 17, as shown in Fig. 1, the same being riveted to the sides and guide-plates l8 and to the bottom plate and inturned flanges.
The bolsters illustrated in Figs. 5 to 8, inelusive, are similar to those described above; but instead of having integral inwardly-extended flanges along the lower edges of the side plates they have angle-bars 19 with inturned flanges, which are riveted to the side lates. The dish- sha ed members 20 and 21 or the body and true bolsters, respectively, differ somewhat in shape from those shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3 to provide for these extra angles. They are riveted to the sides, upper angle-bars, bottom plate, and lower inturned angle-bars.
By using upper and lower angle-bars separate from the side plates and riveting them thereto I am enabled to use bars of difl'erent sizes and strengths in accordance with the kind of cars the bolsters are to be embodied in. By fastening the angle-bars so that strength of the bolster and proportioning it to properly withstand the strains to which it may be subjected.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art 5 that various changes in the details of these structures may be made without departing from the substance of the invention as defined in the appended claims. I do not, therefore, limit n'iyseli to these details except 1 to the extent indicated in the specific claims following.
This patent is intended to embrace only so much of the disclosure made herein as is covered by the claims.
I claim- 1. A ear-bolster, comprisin two side plates, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates along the central portion of its lower edge, each of said plates having integral flanges along the end portions of its lower edge, and
a bottom plate riveted to said flanges and angle-bars, substantially as described.
LA car-bolster, comprisin two. side plates, an angle-bar riveted to eac 1 of said plates 6 along the central portion of its lower edge with one flange extended outwardly, each of said side plates having integral inturned flanges along the end portions of its lower edge, and a bottom plate riveted to the out- 3 wardly-extended flanges of said angle-bars and to the integral flanges of said side plates, substantially as described.
3. A car-bolster, comprisin two side plates, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates along the central portion of its lower edge with one flange extended outwardly, each of said side plates having integral inturned flanges along the end portions of its lower edge, and a bottom late taperim toward its ends riveted to t e outward -extended flanges of said angle-bars and to the integral flanges of said side plates, substantially as described.
4. A car-bolster, comprising two bellied side plates, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates along the central portion of its lower edge with one flan e extended outwardly, each of said side plates having integral inturned flanges along the end portions of its. lower ed 0e, and a bottom plate rivet-ed to the outwardly-extended flanges of said angle-bars and to the integral flan es of said side plates, substantially as descri ed.
5. A car-bolster, comprising side plates each with an outwardly-extended flange along the central portion of its lower edge, and inwardly-extended flanges along the end portions of its lower edge, an angle-bar riveted to each side plate adjacent to its upper edge, and a bottom plate riveted to said lower flanges, substantially as described.
6. A car-bolster, comprising two side plates, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates adjacent to its upper edge, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates along the central portion of its lower edge, each of said side lates having inte ral flanges along the en portions of its lower edge, and a bottom late riveted to said flanges and lower anglears, substantially as described. 7o
7. A car-bolster, comprising two side plates, an angle-bar riveted. to each of said plates adj acent to its u per edge, an angle-bar riveted to each of said plates along the central portion of its lower edge with one flange extended outwardly, each of said plates having inte gral inturned" flanges along the end portions at its lower edge, and a bottom plate riveted to the outwardly-extended flanges of said lower angle-bars and to the flan es of said side plates, substantially as descri ed.
8. A car-bolster, comprising side plates, an angle-bar riveted to the outer side of each of said plates adjacent to its upper edge and with a flange extended outwardly, each of said side plates having an outwardly-extended flange along the central portion of its lower edge and inwardly-extended flanges along the end portions of its lower edge, and a bottom plate riveted to said lower flanges, substantlally as described.
9. A car-bolster, comprising two side plates, an angle-bar riveted to each of said lates adjac-ent to its upper edge and with a ange extended outwardly, an angle-bar riveted'to each of said lates along the central portion of its lower ed e, each of said side plates having an integral flange along the end ortions of its loweredge, a top plate rivete to the outwardly-extended flanges of the u per an- I00 gle-bars, and a bottom plate rivete to the integral flanges of the side plates and to the lower angle-bars, substantially as described.
