Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VEGETABLE-SLICER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1906.
Application flied April c', i905. serai No. 254,200.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY WEA- VER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pullman, in the county of Vhitman and State of lVashington, have invented a new and useful Vegetable-Slicer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vegetable-Slicers, and has for its principal object to provide a simple and effective means for rapidly preparing vegetables for cooking purposes, the various parts being adjustable and interchangeable to permit the slicing of the vegetables into different shapes and into pieces of different size.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the most simple construction in which the cutters may be readily removed should it be necessary to repair or sharpen the same.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel means for handling the vegetables during the cutting operation in order to avoid danger of injury to the hands.
With these and other objects in view, as will more fully hereinafter appear, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accomp anying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportions, size, and minor details of the structure may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a vegetable-Slicer constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a similar view illustrating a different form of slide in position and carrying knives arranged in close relation for the cutting of the vegetable into smaller pieces. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the employment of a plain slide where slicing only is to be accomplished.
Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The device forming the subject of the present invention includes a base-plate 10, having a handle 11, which may be secured to or formed integral with the plate. To the opposite edges of the base-plate are secured side plates 12, forming a trough-like body, and at the outer ends of said plates 12 is a cross-bar 13, on Which is pivoted a plate 16, the front edge of which is oblique to its sides. To the plate 16 is secured a slicing-blade 17, having an oblique cutting edge, said blade being screwed or otherwise secured to the plate 16. The forward portion of the plate 16 is provided with a transversely-extending slot 18, through which extends a bolt 19, that also passes through openings in the side plates 12 and is threaded at one end for the reception of a thumb-screw 20. This permits adjustment of the plate 16 in order to vary the position of the cutting-blade, after Which the plate may be firmly locked or clamped in its adjusted position by turning the thumb-nut 20.
The inner faces of the plates 12 at points adjacent to the opposite edges of the baseplate 10 are provided with parallel grooves 22 for the reception of the opposite edges of a plate 23, the inner end of which is arranged on a line oblique to the longitudinal center line of the plate and parallel with the cutting edge of the blade 17. To the inner portion of the plate 23 is secured a cutter 24, that is formed of a piece of metal, the forward edgev of which is provided with a plurality of slits, and the metal between the slits is bent upward to form a plurality of cutters 25, that are disposed in planes parallel with each other, but follow generally the inclined line of the edge of the blade 17. These cutters 25 extend up approximately to the plane of the cutting edge of blade 12, so that if a potato or other vegetable is placed on plate 23 and moved forward it will be provided with a plurality of parallel incisions, and on continuing the forward movement the blade 17 will act to slice off all that portion below the blade, thus cutting the vegetable into slices suitable for cooking purposes.
The plate 23 is provided at a point near its rear end with an opening 26, so that said plate may be hung on a nail or other support when not in use,I this opening furthermore serving as a finger-hold for convenience in removing the plate for cleaning, sharpening, or other purposes, and especially when it is desired to substitute a plate having cutters of different shape or size or to permit the introduction of a plain platethat is, a plate without cutters-when it is desired to simply slice the vegetables by the blade 17.
In practice each of the implements will be TOO IIO
provided with a plurality of plates and cutters of different shape and size, and these may be readily interchanged, as desired.
In order to avoid injury to the hands while using the device, a carrier 30 is employed, this being in the form of a plate 3l of a width somewhat greater than the distance between the plates l2 and provided with a handle 32. Projecting from the lower portion of the plate 31 are arranged a large number of spurs 33, which are forced into the vegetable, and this is found to form a convenient .means for handling the vegetable during the slicing operation, all ldanger of injury to the fingers being avoided. The spurs 33 in practice are of such length that when the lower face of the plate 31 is resting on top of the side plates l2 there will be no danger of coniing into Contact with the cutters.
Having thus described the invention, what Y is claimed is- In a vegetable-cutter, a frame comprising a pair of parallel side plates, and a handled base-plate rigidly secured thereto, the baseplate extending for a portion only of the length of the side plates, leaving one end of each plate free, and thereby forming a pair of clamping members, the inner faces of said side plates being provided each with a longitudinally-extending groove that terminates at a point approximately in vertical alinement with the inner end of the base-plate, the ends of the grooves forming abrupt shoulders or stops, a freely-removable knife-carrying slide having its opposite edges fitting within the grooves, and its forward end abutting against the stops formed by the end walls of' the groove to limit inward movement of the slide, a pivotally-mounted plate arranged be tween said side plates, and adjustable with respect to the knife-carrying slide, a slicingblade carried by said pivotally-rnounted plate, and a clamping-bolt for drawing the side plates toward each other and clamping the same on said pivotally-mounted plate, clamping ofy the side plates on the knife-carrying slide being prevented by the base-plate, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto aHiXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM HENRY WEAVER.
