Be it known that we, JOHN F. Mines and Four. A. (m'rn.\i.-i.\'N, citizens of the United States. and residents of South Bethlehem, Nortlmnipton county, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Projectiles, of which the following is a speci'lication.
The present invention comprises various improvements in projectiles, and particularly in explosive projectiles.
The objects of the invention are to provide a tracer for the projectile by means of which its course may be observed, to provide an im proved gaswheek, and to reinforce the fuse and prevent the same from being blown out by the explosion of the contents of the shell.
The invention will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in 'w l 1i c h-- Figure 1 a sectional view of a shell embodying the invention, and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are partial sectional views showing other em bodiments of the invention.
Refcrring to Fig. l of the drawings, A indicates an explosiveprojectile having a longitudinal cavity 1 for the explosive material. The design and dimensions of the shell form no part of the present invention, and they may be varied as desired. Centrally arranged in the rear end of the shell is a fuse2. A centrifugal percussive fuse is illustrated; but the present invention is not limited to any particular style or kind of fuse. The fuse 2 is screwed into an axially-threaded opening in the ,rear of the shell. in order to connect the fuse securely to the shell and to provide for the tracer attachment hereinafter described, an integral boss or rearward projection 3 is provided on the rear end of the shell. This boss is threaded internally to receive the fuse, and it is threaded externally to receive the combined strengthener, gascheck, and tracer device B. As shown in Fig. l, tracer device B consists of a hollow cap 4, having an internally-threaded recess by means of which it is 'iitted over and screwed tightly onto the boss The base 5 of the recess arranged to fit against the base 6 of the fuse, and the forward annular portion of the device 13', surrounding the recess, fits tightly the strengthc1n-r. gaschcck, and
against the rear shoulder 7 of the projectile. The device B therefore forms a support for. the fuse and a gas-check to prevent the gases of the firing charge from injuring or passing the fuse. The tracer device B is in the form of a hollow cap having a relatively large chamber 8, in which is stored material adapted to be discharged during the flight of the shell to indicate its path to the eye. This material may be of a pyrotechnic nature to produce a light at night, or it may be a dark fluid or semi fluid or powder visible in the daytime when discharged during the flight of the projectile. As shown, thechamber 8 is provided with one or more outlets 9 in its circumference, through which materiahif fluid or comminuted, will be driven by centrifugal force during the flight of the shell. The chamber 8 is also provided with a fillingopening closed by plug 10. A small opening 11 is provided in the plug to permit of the enber 8 and is closed by a plug 12.
In Fig. 3 shown a form of the device in which there is an annular chamber 13 for the tracer material, a recess 14 being formed in the outer central portion opposite the recess which receives the boss 3, these two recesses being separated by a wall 15, which rests uponthc base 6 of the fuse. This form of the tracer device is stronger and better adapted to withstand the pressure of gases in the gun. In using any of the forms of the tracer device the material should be acked solidly in the chamber to prevent col apse under thepressure of the gases in the gun.
