JOHN M. GROHOF BEN'EVOLA, MARYLAND.
Y Letters Patent No. 82,308, dated September 22, 1868# y IMPROVED MAT.
tlg/rlgemrlexmet tu in ttm gettext aterrt mit making wt nf the zum.
To ALL WHoM IT MAY QONCERN;
Be it known that'I, JOHN M. Gr-ROB, of Benevola, Washington county, Maryland, have inventeda'ne'w and improved Mode of Manufacturing Mats and I -do hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description'of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of the specification, in whichl Figurel is aside view of my grooved mat-frame, with the bars or slots to which the husks are to he fastened.
Figure 2 is a side view of a har that isvheing filled with husks.
Figure 3 is'a side view of the same, showinghow to fasten the ends when the bar isfull, and
Figure 4 isa side View of a completed mat. I
v My invention consists, rst, in using e. wooden or metallic 'frame-oi' any 'shape or form, to hold the bars to which the husksor their substitutes are fastened. y
My invention consists, second, in fastening the husks or their substitutes to wooden or metallic slots or bars,A and then inserting them into a frame.A
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will describe the same more minutely with reference to the drawings. v v l i A. is the frame, Vcompos-ed of wood, and grooved aroundl its inner edgel in such a manner as to form two ianges, B B', between which thelarsv G are placed, when filled. If desired, the flanges maybe composed of separate pieces, placed upon each side oi'- the frame A insuch a manner ,as to leave a groove or recess for the t passage of the bars.,
The upper ilange'B is notched -at C, for the admission of the'outer end of the filled hars, whose opposite Y ends rest in the groove.
Fig. 2 represents a bar, around which the vhusks are being fastened, thus :v Take the husks and dampen them, then lay a bunch on the bar, hold it with your thumb,` and'take'the thin end around the bar, between you and the other end of the husk, forming the' lap D, and lay it under your thumb. l Place the next bunch on this, and proceed as with the other, until the bar is lled, when you fasten the last end by passing it once morev around, and-putting it under the last coil, as at-E, gl.
Then, in orderl to make oblong 4or round mats,'or`sueh as require bars of unequal length, make the frame with grooved sides, as represented in iig. 1, and begin to ll, Vand insert the shortest end bars of the one end. Keep on till you ,get to the last long bar, then ll fremd' the other end, push or press the bars apart, and insert the last long bar. Push the last bar under the notched flange, pin at the other end at F, iig-1, to secure it, .and the mat isl finished. Y
Square or rectangular frameshaving oars of equal lengths, are so easily filled from one end to the other, pressing the bars closely together, as to require no further explanation. y
What 'I claim las my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The mat,constructed as described, consisting of the wooden block having an interior groove `adapted -to receive the filled bars through the notch C in the iienge of said blo-ck, as herein described for the purpose specified.
