Specificationof Letters Patent.
ratented May 29, 1906.
'Application iled August 22, 1905. Serial No. 275,222.
To all whom t may concern.'
vBe it known that I, LEONARD HoRINKo, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Picture- Hanging Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a device especially adapted for hanging heavy pictures, whereby the pictures may be conveniently and expeditiously lowered to the iioor without detaching them from their supports and quickly restored to their normal position on the wall or whereby the pictures may be adjusted up or down on the wall and held securely in adjusted position.
Another purpose of the invention is to provide a hanging device for a picture which will support it at the bottom as welll as at opposite sides of the back.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims. v
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this-specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a picture and the improved hanging device. Fig. 2 is avertical section through the picture and frame and the molding from which the picture is suspended by the improved hanging device, the picture being shown in two positions. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of apicture-frame, showing the application of the improved hanging device. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the bottom support for the picture-frame. Fig. 5 is an enlarged horizontal section through the lower pulley-guide shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the moldinghook employed in connection with the hanging device.
A represents a picture-frame, and A the back thereof. Two loop-brackets 10 and 11 are diagonally secured to the back A at the upper corners of the frame, as is shown in Fig. 3, and the bracket 10 in its loop-section is provided with a peripherally-grooved pulley 102, and the bracket 11 is provided with a corresponding pulley 11a. A horizontal loop-bracket 12 is located centrally of the back A of the frame near its lower edge, as is also shown in Fig. 3, and, as is particularly shown in Fig. 5, the loop-section 12a of the said bracket 12 is provided with two frictionroll'ers 13 and 14, also preferably grooved', the said rollers being spaced a desired distance apart.
In connection withthe brackets 10, 1 1, and
12 a holder 15 is employed for the bottom portion of the frame, which holder is substantially L-shaped in general contour, comprising a vertical member 15a and a horizontal member 15b, the horizontal member at its outer or forward end being preferably provided with upwardly-extending claws 16, although a flange may be substituted for said claws, if desired, and in the vertical member 15a upwardly-inclined slots 17 are produced in its side portions, the inner ends of the said slots being more or less enlarged.
In connection with the parts above mentioned two cords C are employed, and in connection with the cords two hooks B are used, adapted to fit over the cornice or molding 18, from which the picture is to hang. As .is illustrated in Fig. 6, each hook consists of a shank 19, the hook member 2() being at the upper end of the shank, and the said hook member at its free or lower end is provided with inwardly or forwardly extending claws 21, so that when the hook member is iitted over the molding 18, as is shown in Fig. 2, the claws 21 will be made to enter the molding by the weight of the picture, and will thus prevent the hook from accidentally dropping from the molding or moving thereon. The lower portion of the shank 19 of the hook B is carried horizontally forward and then upward, forming a pocket 22 open at the top, and in this pocket a peripherally-grooved friction-pulley 23 is mounted to turn.
Furthermore, if desired, a retaining device D may be provided for one or both ends of the hanging-cords C. This device consists of a socket member 24, adapted to be secured to the back of the picture by a screw or its equivalent, and the hook 27, supported by the socket member.
In hanging a picture with the appointments above mentioned one of the cords C is attached to the loop member 10b of the IOO IIO
sup orting device 15, the foot-section of the sai device having been passed in engagement with the bottom of the frame at its center the7 back. The other cord C is attached to the loop-section 11b of the bracket 11, as is shown in Fig. 3, and is carried up over the pulley 23 of the second hook B thence down over the pulley 11a in the bracket 11, and through the bracket 12 to an engagement with the friction-roller 14, andiinally to an engagement with the vertical member of the holding device 1-5 through the medium of the other'set'of slots 17 therein. The loose ends of the cords C are placed on the hook of the retaining device D to prevent their hanging below the frame.
Thus it will be observed the picture is held firmly in the position to which it is adjusted and that by casting off the cords from the holding device 15 the picture may bedrawn up or let down as far as desired on the wall or carried clear to the floor, ifdesired, and by again fastening the cords C to the-holding device the'picture will be held where placed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patenti 1. In a picture-hanging device, the combination with the picture-frame, of brackets adaptedfor attachment to opposite corner portions thereof, Aeach of said brackets being provided with a friction roller, a third bracket adapted to b'e located on the pictureframe between the corner-brackets and below them, friction-rollers mounted in the said the vertical member 15a extending upaty lower bracket, and a holder adapted to have bearing against theA under portion of the picture-frame, all of the said parts being arranged'to operate-in the manner described.
2. In a picture-hanging device, the combination with the picture-frame and moldinghooks, of opposing brackets attached to opposite corners of the picture-frame, each of said brackets being provided with a single friction-roller, a third bracket located between and below the corner-brackets, the lower bracket being provided with two frictionrollers, a supporting member consisting substantially of L-shaped construction, the foot member whereof is adapted to engage with the bottom ofthe picture-frame, the vertical member extending up at the back of said picture-frame, being provided with opposing slots in its vertical edges, cords, one of which cords is attached to each of the cornerbrackets at one end, each of said cords being passed over the molding-hook and down, one cord over a pulley in each corner-bracket, from whence the two cords are passed each to an engagement with one of the pulleys in the lower bracket, the ends of the cords passing through the slots of the supporting member, and means for securing the ends of the cords.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
