SADDLE ADJUSTING ITSELF AUTOMATICALLY IN TWO DIRECTIONS.
0 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed September 3,1904:- $erial No. 223,293.
T0 01/ whom it may concern:
Be it known that LCARL SZAMEITAT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at 95 Steinstrasse, Hamburg, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Saddle Adjusting Itself Automatically in Two Directions, of whic the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved construction for riding-saddles of that class wherein the supporting surfaces or parts are adapted to yield to conform to the contour of the animal.
To this end my invention consists of a fork and downwardly-extending hinged stays connected with the fork by springs in a manner to maintain the stays tightly in engagement with the sides of the animal. Said stays are connected with the saddletree, and there are provided longitudinally disposed springs which are also connected with the saddle-tree at a point near the cantle and with said stays. I
My invention will be more fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a gentlemans saddle embodying the main features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a like view of aladys saddle. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified embodiment of my invention.
The saddle-tree is shown without the usual padding and consists of back straps a, which terminate at the rear in a cantle aand extend forwardly to a point approximately at the horn or pommel. The fork b, by which the pommel or horn may be formed, is provided with downwardly-extending stays a c hinged to the fork at d d. Springs f are provided for normally holding the stays a in con tact with the sides of the animal, the said springs being rigidly secured to the inner faces of the fork at f and slidably connected with the stays by means of aslot-and-pin connection f and g. The forward ends of the back straps a are secured to the stays c c at a same with the fork I).
point adjacent the hinged connection of the Longitudinally-disposed springs i 'L are provided which extend from the stays c c, to which they are pivotally secured rearwardly to a point adjacent the cantle, where they are secured at h to the saddle-tree. e is a buckle to which the stirrup-strap may be attached.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the saddletree is, composed of a fork and pommel 1c, which are pivotally secured to back plates or bars Z. Said parts j and 7c are also connected by a strap m, provided with lacings a, con necting said strap with the bars 1. The longitudinally-disposed springs i are secured to the lower faces of the backbars l and perform their function in a manner similar to springs shown in the preferred forms of Figs. 1 and 2.
In my improved form of saddle the animal bearing or supporting parts are not only adapted to yield, but are so constructed as to conform with all irregularities of the contour of the surface with which they engage. Fur thermore, it will be noted that by reason of the fact that the parts a a of the saddle-tree are integral from the cantle to the stays c c a very rigid support or seat is provided, as the hinged or movable parts are all at the forward end of the saddle.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- A saddle-tree comprisin hinged thereto, a cantle, bac r plates connecting said cantle and stays, springs connecting said stays and fork, and longitudinally-dis posed springs secured to said stays and the rear of said saddle.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL SZAMEITAT.
