COLLAR STAND 0R SUPPORT.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.27, 1905.
V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
COLLAR STAND OR SUPPORT- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed March 27, 1905. Serial No. 252,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DELF, a subject of His Majesty the King of Great Britain, and a resident of 43 Wrentham avenue, IVillesden, London, N. W., England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collar Stands or Holders, (for which I have made application for patent in Great Britain, No. 19,733, dated September 13, 190 1,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new or improved collar-stand for use in displaying linen or other collars or like articles upon the counters or shelves or on the rods of shopwindows or show-cases.
The object of the invention is to render possible the display of the collars or like articles in such a manner that they shall look as they are intended to appear when in wear.
In order that my invention may be the more readily and clearly understood, I have hereunto appended a sheet of drawings, wherein I have illustrated, together with cer tain modifications in detail, a construction of device according to my invention which I have found to work well.
In reference to the drawings, Figure 1 illustrates a side view of a device constituting the collar-stand according to the preferred embodiment thereof. Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a slightly-modified form of the device shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device as shown by Fig. 1. Fig. 3 illustrates a perspective view of the device with a collar attached thereto for display purposes as hereinafter described. Fig. 4 is a detail View illustrating a slight modification of the device as at Fig. 1. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are further detail views in illustration of slightlymodified means which may be employed for fixing the device in the position desired. Figs. 9 and 10 illustrate how the base proper, A, may be provided with lateral members for the purpose of additional support.
For the purposes of my invention I provide a strip or length A of metal or other suitable material. The ends of this strip or length A are turned up at right angles, or approximately so, to form two upwardly-projecting portions B and O, the former of which is provided in suitable manner with a stud D, while the latter has formed therein a tapped hole for receiving a small screw E of convenient design.
In addition to providing the upturned end C with a screw, such as E, a stud F, similar to the stud D, as shown in Fig. 1*, may be fixed thereto below the screw; but in the best and preferred embodiment of the invention, in lieu of so attaching a stud direct to the up turned end O, the stud (designated by F) is secured to a plate G, which in turn is pivoted between two lugs H, projecting from said upturned end O. In this way a better adjusting action is secured, as will hereinafter be clear.
To the said strip or base A is preferably attached in sliding relation therewith, as by one or more bands J, a second strip K, which being arranged somewhat longer than the base proper, A, may by taking hold of the upturned end B and the opposite end of the strip K be moved in and out like a sliding foot-rule, and thus forms an extending base for the stand. The free end of such extending base K may for fixing the device be formed in any suitable manner. In the examples given in Fig. 1 the extending base K is provided with a curved end L for engaging the horizontal rods of shop-windows, showcases, 860.
Where desirable, however, I may provide the extending base K with a downwardlyturned end N, adapted to fit into an adjust able socket M, such as is used on circular uprights or rods for window-dressing, or in order to dispense with the socket N the end of the extending base K may be bent round, as at Fig. 6, and provided with an adjustingscrew O.
As further examples of the divers ways of forming the free end of the extending base K, which may be advantageously utilized, Fig.
7 illustrates an instance of how the end may be so bent or curved as to adapt it for attachment to either a circular rod or a fiat shelf, counter, or the like at will, while Fig. 8 illus trates how a curved end, such as P, may be arranged for adjustable attachment to a rod by providing an adjusting-screw R in connection with the said end P.
In use the collar S or like article desired to be displayed is fastened, as shown in Fig. 3, to the device by engaging the studs D and F with the front and rear buttonholes, whereby it is securely held. and is, moreover, further supported and steadied by the projecting portion of the extending base upon which the back portion of the collar rests firmly.
So far as concerns its use as a collar holder or support merely the device with its attached collar could now at once be located-in the desired position for display; but before this is done and in order to make the collar look as it is intended to appear in wear the screw E is rotated so that the end thereof presses against the plate G, which latter, consequently, in turn presses against the back of the collar. By thus imparting ressure -against the loack of the collar while t e studs D and F at the front and back of the device and the extending base K are simultaneously keeping the bottom of the collar securely in position all round, the whole set or slope of the collar is altered, and according to the extent of the movement of the screw E so may the set or slope of the front of the collar be regulated to any required degree. When the collar is thus set or regulated to have the ap pearance it would take in wear, the device may then be placed in position for display purposes on the counter or shelf or on a rod or rods of a shop-window or show-case, as will be readily understood, the extending base permitting the device to be adjusted for and used upon rods that are a reasonable distance apart.
As a slight modification of my invention, and referring to Fig. 4, the back stud F may be dis ensed with, and in lieu thereof the plate may be so formed that its lower end constitutes a loop or return end T for engaging the lower back part of the collar.
It may here be observed that notwithstanding both the base proper, A, and the extending base K are shown as consisting of plain strips or lengths of metal or other suitable material, either or both may, for imparting additional support when placed upon a counter or shelf be provided with lateral members A or be formed wider at the cen tral or other part or parts of theirlength.
Having now described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device consisting of a base having means for securing a collar in position thereon and means whereby the set or slope of the collar may be regulated by pressure applied against the back of the collar.
2. A device consisting of an extensible base having means for securing a collar firmly in position thereon and means whereby the set or slope of the collar may be regulated by pressure applied against the back of the collar.
3. A device consisting of a base having upturned ends, one of said ends being provided with a stud and the other of said ends having a stud and regulating-screw, the latter for imparting pressure against the back of the collar.
4. A device consisting of an extensible base, one portion of said base having up turned ends respectively provided with engaging means, and a regulating-screw and hinged plate, said plate being provided with a stud and adapted to have pressure imparted thereagainst by said regulating-screw.
5. A device consisting of a base having upturned ends, one of said ends being provided with a stud and the other of said ends having a regulating-screw and a hinged arm; said arm being provided with a stud and adapted to impart pressure against the back of a collar, and said base having means of attachment.
6. A device consisting of an extensible base, one portion of said base havin upturned ends respectively provided wit engaging means for a collar, and a regulatingscrew and hinged plate, said plate being provided with a stud and adapted to impart pressure against the back of a collar, and the other of said base portions having means of attachment.
7. A device consisting of an extensible base, one portion of said base having upturned ends and the other portion thereof means of attachment, one of said upturned ends being, provided with a stud and the other of said upturned ends having a regulating-screw and a pivoted plate, said plate being provided with engaging means for a collar and adapted to impart pressure against the back thereof when operated upon by said re ulating-screw.
ln witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM DELF Witnesses:
HENRY CONRAD HEIDE, I ALBERT GEORGE BARNES.
