IMPROVEMENT IN KNOB-LATGHES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAIZ CONCERN:

.Be it known that I, T. C. BALL, of Bellows Falls, in the county of Windham, and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,

clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of the lock-arrangement with the knob removed, and

Figure 2 affront view, showingthe relative position ofthe devices, which, when properly adjusted, form the lock.

The nature of this invention consists in the employment of a loose sliding ring-like device, confined between a fixed ring on the shank ofthe knob and another fixed ring on theidoor, all constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purposehereinafter specified.

To enable others to avail themselves of the benefits oi' my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation. Y

A represents the inner side of a door, upon which is rmly secured the metallic ring b. .Upon this ring are projections e e', and through the ring b passes the shank D, upon which are the knobs C C.

grepresents a ring, secured to shank D.` This ring is provided with a slot, z', and also witha circulardangc upon its inner side.

t is also a ring-like device, which forms the lock. Said device is confined loosely between the rings b and g, and is furnished on one side with slot c, and at its opposite side or end with projections c Ic. These projeetions are at right angles to each other. The one on the side is intended to enter the slot in ring g, the other to rest against the projection e on ring b, while the slot in ring zrvrill lit into projection e, thus rendering it impossible to turn the latch, and furnishing a simple yet eective safeguard against burglars picking the lock. To unlock, itis only necessary to disengage the ring z by sliding it upuntil the projection is out of the slot. What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The combination ofthe lock-ring h, slots c, and projections k lc, with and between the plates or escutclleon b, and its projections e and e, and the ring g with its slot i, all operating together as and for the purpose set forth.
