Description
HERBERT L. ANDREWS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 82,062, dated September 15. T868.
IMPROVEMENT IN BLAGKBOARDS.
tite 5:15am referat tu in ttm ttters patent mit mating part tt ttt sume.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CON CERN Be it known that I, HERBERT L. ANDREWS, of Chicago, in the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Combined Blackboard and Map or Chart-Holder and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front Iview.
Figure 2, an end view.
Figure 3, a top view, with arms extended.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a blackboard with arms, which can be extended, and with stationary and movable pins or hooks, on which to hang maps or charts; in suspending such board in a frame, so that the board may be adjusted at different angles; in supporting the board in its frame or supports by means of screws and nuts, so that the board can be fastened at any desired angle; in so constructing the supports that the board can be adjusted at different heights; and in the combinations herein described. Y
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a blackboard, constructed in the usual manner, except as herein otherwise described. In the top of the board, I provide a groove or recessed place, b b, in which I place two or more sliding pins or hooks, o, movable at pleasure in said groove, the pins being attached to small blocks made to t the recess. At cach end, I hinge an arm, e, provided with one or more pins or hooks, y, and so arranged and constructed that, when open or turned out, they will be on a line with the top of the board, as shown by dotted lines in fig. 1, and, when folded or closed, rest on the top, as shown in the same gure. Maps or charts can be hung on these hooks or pins, and those placed in the groove "1n the topof the board, being movable, can be adjusted readily, so as to receive maps of diderent sizes.
I suspend the blackboard between supports, C, provided with a cross-bar, D, and braces, 71,. In the ends of tbe supports which rest on the iioor, I insert sharp-pointed pins, which prevent them from slipping, no matter at what angle placed. c c are nuts, inserted in the edges of the board, and a a are screws, passing,
through the supports C, into the nuts lc k, supporting the board in its place. By turning the screws, or one ofV them, the board can be clamped between the supports on each end or side ofthe board, and thus be held at any angle at which it may be placed. The dimensions of the board and its several parts must be according to the use for which it may be designed. l To the cross-hars D, I attach a chartsupporter,f, which may be also used as a chalk-holder.v Charts which will sustain their own weight when in use for purposes of instruction can be placed on this chart-rest f.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is The blackboard A, when provided with the groove b, arms e, pins or hooks c, and supported, constructed,
and operating substantially as speciiied. A
HERBERT L. ANDREWS.
