A. H. ALLISON, OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 82,050, elated September 15, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GULTIVATORS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I,'A. H. ALLISON, of Oharlottesville, in the county of Hancock, and State of Indiana, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters offreference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- 'Figure 1 represents a side elevation, and I Figure 2 a plan or top view of my cultivator.
The nature of this invention consists inthe construction and'arrangement of certain devices, the peculiarities of which willbe hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art-to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawingsv A represents aframe, to which are secured the axles, (see fig. 2,) upon which the wheels B B are situated. Secured" across frame A, near its front end, is a bar or support, 6, to the rear side of which are secured hooks d d, to be referred to hereafter. Theztongue D is secured to the under side of the front bar of frame A and brace b. To the tongue I), on the inside of said frame, is secured the double-tree c, which is provided with two arms, 0' c, projecting out therefrom a. suitable distance, and provided with whifile-trees e e. These arms pass through supports ff, which will be more particularly hereafter described. C designates a collar or yoke, made as seen in fig. 1, or rounded at its centre, where it is secured to the lower side of the outer portion of the tongue, and made at its lower ends horizontal, upon which blocks pg are placed. These blocks are furnished with adjusting-holes, as seen in fig. 2. ff are supports or uprights, situated loosely upon the ends of the collar C, alongside of the blocks 9 g, and are made with adjusting-holes also, through which pass the arms 0' c, as above intimated. G G designate the beams of the cultivator-teeth, the front ends of which are provided with clips or braces, embracing the blocksgg, and secured thereto, at any distance apart, by means of pins entering the holes in the blocks. The outer ends of these beams, on the under side, arefurnished with shanks ii, to which are attached the shovels or teeth of the cultivator. The shanks ii are provided with vertical slots at their lower ends, into which is inserted'one end of the curved bars or supports it h, which are fastened therein by keys or pins. The opposite ends of the curved bars it h are secured to the beams G G. k k designate staples, fastened to the upperside of the beams G G, which are designed to catch into the hooks d d, on brace b of the frame A, for the purpose of throwing the cultivator-teeth up out of the way after plowing. Z Z designate the straps or hands, secured to the upper rear ends of the beams G G, for the purpose of receiving the feet of the driver, when located in the seat F, onthe rearbar of frame-A. J J are bails or handles,
attached to the sides of the rear ends of the beams of the cultivator-teeth, and projecting upwards, within a suitable distance of the driver, so as to permit of the driver operating them, in order to raise or lower the teeth.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The yoke C, secured to the under side of the tongue, and provided with the adjusting-blocks g g, in combination with the beams G G, uprights ff, provided with adjusting-holes, double-trcc 0, arms a a, and braces, connecting the ends of the yoke with the main frame, all constructed, arranged, and operated in the manner and for thepurpose set forth.
2. The beams G G, hinged to the adjusting-blocks g g, and provided with the shanks 2' i and braces h k, in combination with the bails J J and foot-pieces Z Z, all constructed, arranged, and operated as set forth.
' In testimony that I claim the foregoing asmy own, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
