PLACKET-CLASP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. FISCHER, a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovenients in Placket-Olasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved form of clasp, and is particularly well adapted for usage upon garments Where buttons are obliectionable or impracticable.
The device as herein illustrated is shown applied to the placket of a skirt, but is not intended to be limited to such limited use.
The invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive clasp or fastener of the character mentioned by which easy and secure fastening of garments may be readily effected and yet promptly unfastened when desired.
To these and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features of improvement and combina tion and arrangement of parts, which l will now proceed to describe and finally claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein-- Figure 1 illustrates a portion of the back of a skirt, my improved clasp being shown applied to the placket thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the socket member of the clasp. Fig. 3 is a section thereof, taken on the line a e in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side view of the socket member' shown in Fig. 2 looking in the direction of the arrow in said ligure. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the tongue member of the clasp. Fig. 6 is a section thereof, the section being taken on a line l? b in Fig. 5; and Fig. 7 is an enlarged view of the socket member and tongue members assembled in locked position, the dotted lines indicating the manner of inserting the tongue member into the socket member.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a skirt having the usual opening or placket 2 at the back thereof.
3 indicates the socket member of my device, and 11 is the tongue member.
The placket is shown in the drawings partially open to better illustrate my device, there being as many clasps employed as is necessary to hold the placket closed.
Referring to Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the socket member 3 is composed of a base 5, an overhanging spring-guard 6, and an overhanging resilient leaf or keeper 7 adjacent thereto, the keeper 7 being provided with a socket 8, the under portion of which forms a tongue 8. As will be seen from Fig. 4, the keeper 7 is provided with downward projections or wings 9 9 at each end to prevent the premature lengthwise separation of the tongue member therefrom. The base 5 of the socket member 3 is provided with openings 10 for the purpose of attachment. 11 indicates the tongue member of the clasp, which is composed of a base 12, a resilient overhanging leaf or keeper 13, and a spring-guard 14, overhanging said keeper, thus forming a tongue, the keeper 13 being provided with a socket 15 for receiving the tongue S, formed by the socket S of the socket member The socket S ofthe member 3 andthe socket 15 of the member 1 1 are formed in the metal when said members are stamped or otherwise formed. The member 11 is secured to the garment in a manner similar to the member 3 and is provided with openings 16 for this purpose. lt may here be stated that the member 11, as shown in Fig. 5, is in a position just reverse of the one occupied when applied for cooperation with member 3. l/Vhen the placket of a skirt or any two or more pieces of material are held together by my improved clasp, said clasp will be in a position illustrated by Fig. 7. l/Vhen the tongue member 11 is inserted into the socket member 3, the guard 14 of member 11 will press the guard 6 of the member 3 downwardly, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 7. The tongue member being then forced still farther inwardly will finally assume a position as shown by full lines, at which time the tongue Sa will have been forced by the resiliency of the material into the socket 15 of member 11. Vhen the tongue and socket members are clasped, the keeper 13 will be between the projections or wings 9 9, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2. It has been shown that when the clasp members are locked the respective guards 6 and 14 have been forced past each other until the guard 14 has been completely inserted between the base 5 and keeper 7 of socket member 3, Fig. 7. Consequently the two members cannot be separated laterally, or, in other words, in the reverse direction to the one for locking, as the two guards 6 and 14 would catch and prevent such action, and, as will be seen by Fig. 7, the guard 14, base 5, and keepers 7 and 13 are in contact, the parts IOO IIO
There is but one way to disconnect the parts--` namely, by slidably forcing them apart lengthwise-that is, pulling member l1 lengthwise from member S-the keeper 7 being sprung upwardly by such pull when the `socket member 3 contacts a wing 9, and thus permitting the tongue member 1 l to be Withdrawn from the socket member 3, or viceversa, in a lengthwise direction. The action of the tongue 8a and socket 15 and wings 9v 9 prevent the members constituting the clasp frompremature separation; but by a lengthwise pull the members may be separated without difiiculty.
When a series of my clasps are applied-to the placket of a skirt or to other parts to be detachably connected, the fastening operation can be very easily and promptly accomplished and the parts unfastened even more readily, as it will then simply be necessary to give a direct pull upon either the part of the garment having the tongue or the socket members of the clasp, the pull of course being in a direction lengthwise of said members. .Of course it will be understood that the frictional contact and resiliency of the metal constituting the tongue and socket members described is such that under ordinary pressureto which garments provided with my clasps are subjected the parts will not be disconnected, but that it will require a direct abnormal pull or pressure to cause such disconnection.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried by said base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keeper being formed by a leaf projecting from said base, a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard carried by said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members, and said tongue and socket members being adapted for slidable disconnection.
2. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried by said base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keeper being formed by a leaf projecting from said base; a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard car- `riedby said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members, and said tongue and socket members being adapted for slidable disconnection, together with means adapted to prevent premature separation of said members.
3. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried by said base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keeper being formed by a leaf projecting from said base, a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard carried by said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members, and said tongue and socket members being adapted for slidable disconnection, together with downwardly-projecting wings carried by the keeper of said socket member adapted to prevent the premature separation of said socket and tongue members.
4. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried bysaid base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keeper being formed by a leaf projecting from said base; a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard c arried by said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members, said tongue and socket members being adapted for slidable disconnection, an. auxiliary tongue carried by the keeper of said socket member, and an auxiliary socket formed in the tongue of said tongue member, said auxiliary tongue adapted to enter said auxiliary socket when said members are connected.
5. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried by said base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keepery being formed by a leaf projecting from said base; a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard carried by said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members, said tongue and socket members being adapt- IOO ed for slidable disconnection, downwardlyprojecting members carried by the keeper of said socket member, adapted to prevent the premature separation of said socket and tongue members, an auxiliary tongue carried by the keeper of said socket member, and an auxiliary socket formed in the tongue of said tongue member, said auxiliary tongue adapted to enter said auxiliary socket when said members are connected.
6. In a clasp, the combination of a socket member, comprising a base, a guard carried by said base and a keeper adjacent to said guard, said keeper being formed by a leaf projecting from said base; a tongue member comprising a base, a tongue formed by a leaf projecting from said base, and a guard carried by said tongue, said guards adapted to prevent lateral separation of said members vand said tongue and socket members being IIO izo
