Description

PATENTED APR, 24, 1906.
F. E. ALLEN.
BOTTLE.
, portion being forme UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED E. ALLEN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ROBERT SORG, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOTTLE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 24, 1906.
Application filed December 29,1904. Serial No. 238,838.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED E. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved bottle; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side central sectional elevation of the neck of a bottle, showing my improved stopper in position, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top disk removed from the bottle. Fig. 3 is a perspective sectional view of the annular grooved ring to hold the disk in position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the locking-ring.
To put my invention into practice, I form the neck of the bottle with a contracted portion 3 to engage with the cork or stopper 4, leaving an enlarged ortion 2 above, said d with a circumferential groove 5, located a short distance below the perimeter of mouth of the neck 1. I now form from suitable material, such as glass, an annular ring 6, having a circumferential exterior groove 7 and an inwardly-overlapping flange 10, adapted to engage with a disk 9, placed upon the top of the cork 4. A spring open ring 8 is now provided, which when arranged in position within the registering grooves 5 and 7 will lock the ring 6 and disk 9 in the mouth of the bottle and prevent the withdrawal of the cork 4.
In operation the bottle is filled and the cork or stopper 4 placed in position. The disk 9 is placed upon the top of the cork, the springring 8 arranged in the groove 5 of the ring 6, and the said rings forced into the neck of the bottle until the two grooves 5 7 register the one with the other, at which time the said spring-ring will engage with the grooves and prevent the withdrawal of the parts.
To open the bottle, it is necessary to break the disk 9, thereby destroying the manufacturers seal, which maybe of any suitable material, such as glass. The cork 4 is then withdrawn, and it is obvious that a similar seal cannot be arranged in position Without detection.
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention. Therefore I do not wish to confine myself to the exact details shown and described, but wish to claim all such as would come properly within the general scope of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described bottle, comprising a bottle-neck having a contracted portion 3 in which a cork or stopper is placed, and a circumferential groove 5 formed within the said neck, an annular ring 6 having a groove 7 to register with that formed in the neck of the bottle and an inner overlapping flange 10, a breakable disk 9 engaging said flange, and a spring split ring arranged in said grooves, all arranged and combined for service substan tially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRED E. ALLEN.
