INVERTED INCANDESCENT GAS-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1'7, 1906'.
Application filed December 13,1904. Serial No. 236,657.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MONTFORD KAY, a subj ect of the King of Great Britain, residing at No. 54 London road, Clapton, London, N. E., in England, have invented new and useful Improvements in Inverted Incandescent Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specifiannular bulge or with more than one such annular bulge or an annular recess all round the inside, or the burner is provided with two or more of these improvements in combination.
Figure 1 represents in sectional elevation the lower end of a burner constructed according to this invention. Figs. 2 and 3 are similar views of modifications. Figs. 4 and 5 represent another modified form in sectional elevation and in inverted plan, and Figs. 6 and 7 are similar views of a slightly-modified construction.
Referring to Fig. 1, the point of the burnertube a, which delivers the mixture of air and gas to the mantle, is provided with an annular outer bulge or rounded flange b, the effect of which is that the outer zone of the gaseous mixture here issuing is thrown out toward the interior surface of the mantle in such a way as to afford a longer passage and a longer time for the more intimate mixture and consequent more perfect combustion of the gas and air in the ascent to the top of the mantle, this outer zone of the entering gases being, as it were, thrown into the burning gases rising from the lower section of the mantle, the flan e producing a narrowing or throat within the mantle at a point an appreciable distance below the mouth of the mantle, or, as shown in Fig. 2, an annular recess 0 may be formed in this improved flanged bottom end of the burner which tends to throw the outer zone of the issuing gases toward the interior surface of the mantle and to cause the gas and air to be more intimately mixed, or, as shown in Fig. 3, the end of the burner-tube a may be unprovided with a bulge or flange,
but have the annular recess 0, or, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, the lower end of the burnertube is provided with a hollow enlargement 7L, forming a recess which may be plain or have inwardly-proj ecting circumferential corrugations or saw-cuts or teethi (both being shown) for the purpose of more thoroughly disturbing and mixing the gases. In the construction shown in Figs. 6 and 7 these teeth i are longer, being suitably produced by circular saw-cuts 10, Fig. 7.
The burner ends or points constructed according to this invention are provided with any suitable means for supporting mantles, such as a flange Z or otherwise, and may be applied to burners of any suitable construction.
I claim 1. An inverted incandescent gas-burner having a straight burner-tube provided with an enlargement upon the wall at the open and unobstructed end thereof for spreading the issuing gases, and a mantle surrounding said open end and extending considerably above and below the same, for the purpose specified.
2. An inverted incandescent gas-burner having a straight-tube burner provided with an annular recess in the wall thereof at and around the open and unobstructed end of the burner, said recess having an approximately horizontal wall, and a mantle surrounding said open end and extending considerably above and below said recess, for the purpose specified.
3 An inverted incandescent gas-burner having a straight burner-tube provided with an annular bulge around and on the open and unobstructed end thereof for spreading the issuing gases, a mantle surrounding said open end and extending considerably above and below same, and a free combustion-space between the bulge and mantle, for the purpose specified.
4. An inverted incandescent gas burner having a burner-tube provided with an enlargement around and onthe open end thereof, an annular recess in the wall of said tube at and around said open end, a mantle surrounding said open end and extending considerably above same, and a free combustionspace between the enlargement and mantle, for the purpose specified.
5. An inverted incandescent gas burner having a burner-tube provided with an annular bulge around and on the open end thereof, an annular recesss in said bulge, a mantle surrounding said open end and extending v projecting inwardly into said open end, for
the purpose set forth.
7. An inverted lncandescent gas burner having an annular bulge around its open end,
an annular recess in the bulge and radial slits in the lower horizontal wall of said bulge projecting inwardly into said open end, sub stantially as and for the purpose set forth.
