TUG-HOLDER FOR SWINGLETREES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 17, 1906.
Application filed February 11, 1905. Serial No. 245,195.
ter which will secure a tug to a swingletree without liability of becoming accidentally disengaged.
Afurther object is to provide a holder which is adjustable, so that it may be applied to swingletrees of different widths.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a broken plan view of a swingletree provided with my device. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of same, taken on line II II of Fig. 1. arm and loop forming part of the holder.
In said drawings, 1 designates one end of a swingletree provided with my holder.
2 designates an adjustable clamp for securing the device to the swingletree. Said clamp comprises two resilient members 3 4, having terminals 5 5 and 6 6, respectively, extending at right angles thereto and adjustably and detachably secured together and to the swingletree by means of adjustingscrews 7 8.
By securing the device to the swingletree with a clamp said swingletree will be reinforced instead of weakened, as'would be the case were it secured by means of a bolt or screw passing through the swingletree, and by making said clamp adjustable it may be arranged to fit swingletrees of different widths. It may also be adjusted longitudinally upon the swingletree for a purpose hereinafter described.
Ends 5 and 5 are arranged at the under side of the clamp, so that they will not catch the animals tail.
9 designates a straight arm pivoted at its bifurcated inner end 10 upon screw 8 and provided at its outer terminal with a loop 11, through which the rear portion of tug 12 extends.
13 designates a flat spring secured at one end to arm 9 and having its opposite end extending between the swingletree and screw Fig. 3 is a front elevation of an,
8, so that it will bend around said screw when the looped end of the arm is drawn forward to the dotted position, Fig. 1, and thus exert retractile force on said arm. Spring 13 'nor mally holds the looped end of arm 9 against the front side of the swingletree, so that when the tug becomes slack, as in going down grade, said arm will not be permitted to swing forward and allow the tug to become accidentally disengaged from the swingletree.
When the swingletree becomes badly worn near its ends from the tugs rubbing thereon, said tugs may be made to bear at other points by loosening the clamps and adjusting the holders longitudinally upon the swingletree.
From the above description it is apparent that I have produced a device which is simple in construction and thoroughly effective for the purpose intended.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a swingletree, of a clamp having longitudinal adjustment thereon, and a tug-engaging member pivotally secured to said clamp so that it will be adjusted longitudinally with the latter, substantially as described.
2. A tug-holder consisting of a clamp comprising two resilient members adjustably held together so they may embrace and be adjusted longitudinally upon swingletrees of different widths, and a tugengaging member pivotally secured to said clamp so that it will be adjusted longitudinally with the latter, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a swingletree, of a clamp having longitudinal adjustment thereon, a screw for holding said clamp at any point of its adjustment, an arm pivotally mounted at its inner end upon said screw so that it will be adjusted longitudinally with the clamp, a tug-engaging loop at the. outer end of said arm, and a spring engaging the arm for normally holding its looped end in contact with the swingletree, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afl'ix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ORRA S. JOHNSTON.
