Be it known that I, THEODORE J. McGoWAN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Pumps; and I do hereby declare'the following to be a. full, clear, and exact clescriptionthereof, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My presentimprovement rela-tes primarily to th pump for which Letters Patent were granted to- Ine on the 26th day of' Muy, 1863, and consists in novel and superior arrangement of the chambers or pockets, (commonly calledvacuumchambersf) employed tocontan a. body of air to regulate thc i'ow of the water.-
In the accompanying drawingsi Figure 1 is a perspective'view of n double-:toting pump' embodying my invention.
Figure 2 exhibits the sidevaenumehatnbers in connection with a. vacumjacket on the barrel of the pump, Y'
Figurcz being alsectional view of thesamc.
A is the barrel of the pump, B the suction-pipe, Cthe discharge-air vessel, and D the disehnrgeppelj The. valve-chest consists prefernblyo a single casting, E, which connects to thefpump-bnrrel, ne shown,`and oo n-4 tains the chambers e e forgdth'e suction-valves ffnnd the chamber g, for the(lischnrge-valves-L h. 'lhe chest' E also has formed within or on it, what constitutes my invention, viz, the 'vacuummpockets or chambers b 11.',
A single-plnte,-fF, closes-all the' chambers fof the chest E in front, and :nukes the joints. complete. 'lrhc' suction-chamber e connects withthe' bottom fend of'the pump, through a side pipe, G, and the chamber e connects with the upper end through the ldirect channel Hyg. 2. The discharge-chambery connects through aperture I with the air-vessel C. t. l f .Y
Where a jacket, J, around the bari-cl A is used, thcpockets b b communicate with the same through aportures t' i. .l I 1 Suctionpipe B communicates with its valves and with vacuum-pockets b b by the'singlc passage b". It will be seen` that thcchnmbcrs b b', being cast with or'otherwise formed upon thc valve-chest, as in my present improvement, the cap may be much lighter and moro manageable than where cast in onepiecc with the chambers oripockets, as in my patent of 26th May, 1863.
I claim asnew, and of my invention herein- .The vacuumchainbers.6 bf, when cast or otherwise formed upon the valve-chest, 'substantially as herein described for the purpose specified. v
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set.. hand.
i A THEODORE J. MCGOWAN.
