WILLIAM DOYLE, OF WEST LORNE, CANADA.
COAT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 1'7, 1906.
Application filed March 28, 1904. Serial No. 200.500.
To all whom t may concern;
'Be it known that I, WILLIAM DOYLE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at lVest Lorne, in the county of Elgin, Province of Ontario, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coat-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to holders for coats and other garments in which the Weight of the garments tends to close the gripping mechanism to iirmly hold the garment in place; and the objects of my improvements are to provide a holder of this kind that shall be adapted to hold a coat in position, so that it can be easily slipped on by the person intending to wear it, that shall be so constructed that all danger of the garment slipping off is avoided, and that shall be simple and strong. I attain these objects by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of my improved coat-holders. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same. 3 is a cross-section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective of a pair of these holders, a coat supported by the same being shown in dottedlines.
Similar reference characters refer to like parts throughout the several views.
The frame A of the holder is adapted to be fastened to the wall or to a hall-rack or any other desirable object by screws, as shown, and to its lower end a hook B is attached. Pivoted at the upper end of the frame is a hooked bar O, which is provided with lugs D, between which is pivoted the grip E. A pin F passes through slot L in this grip and through slots G in the hook C. On its ends are connected the links II, the lower ends of which are pivoted 'to the lower end of the frame A. A block J between these links car' ries one end of the spring K, the other end of which is secured to the hook B, as shown.
Whenever a weight is placed on the hook on the end of the bar C, it will be depressed, causing the upper ends of the links H to swing outward, carrying with them the upper end of the grip E, which is forced against the end of hook C, as shown in Fig. 4. As soon as the downward pressure on the hooked bar C is removed by lifting off the garment the spring K will swing back the links H and the grip E at the same time raising the outer end of the hooked bar, all the parts resuming the position shown in Fig. 1.'
When the coat-holders are used in pairs, as shown in Fig. 4, and placed about thirteen inches apart and the proper distance from the Hoor, a coat may be held in desirable position for being put on, thus dispensing with an assistant for that purpose. As soon as the coat is on the shoulders of the wearer the grips swing back and the coat is released.
Having now explained my improvements, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a coat-holder, the combination of a frame, a forwardly-extending hooked bar pivoted to said frame, gripping means pivoted to said hooked bar, and a link pivoted to said frame and connected to said grip ing means to cause the same to swing towar the free end of the hooked bar.
2. In a coat-holder, the combination of a frame, a forwardly-extending hooked bar pivoted to said frame, gripping means ivoted to said hooked bar, a link pivote to said frame and connected to said gripping means to cause the same to swing toward the free end of the hooked bar, and a spring to return said parts to normal position.
3. In a coat-hanger, the combination of a frame, a forwardly-extending bar pivoted to the same having an upturned end and provided with a depending lug and a longitudinal slot, a gripping device pivoted to said lug and provided with a longitudinal slot, a pair of links pivoted to said frame, a pin secured to the free ends of said links and eX- tending through the slots in said bar and gripping device, and a spring to return said parts to normal position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, at West Lorne, Province of Ontario, March 21, 1904.
VILLIAM DOYLE.
In presence of- JOHN R. SKINNER, WVM. CLARK, Jr.
