BASE FOR POSTS- Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that we, JAMES W. BEARD and J AMES SALTER, citizens of the United States, residing at Bienville, in the parish of Bienville and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bases for Posts; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in bottoms for posts of any kind and also for telegraph and telephone poles, and comprises a socket member which may be of any suitable shape and having downwardly-projecting wings adapted to be securely held in the ground, while the upper surface of the bottom of the socket is preferably inclined in order to shed water and provided with a lug or spur designed to engage in the bottom of a post.

Our invention consists, further, in various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the base. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the invention, and Fig. 3 is a similar longitudinal sectional view taken in a plane at right angles to the plane of Fig. 2.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a socket member, which in the present instance is shown as open upon two sides andhaving two closed sides A, which taper slightly and are provided with apertures a, through which bolts or other fastening means may be passed to securely anchor a post to the socket. The upper surface of the bottom of said socket portion has inclined surfaces B, and a lug or spur 0 projects from the ridge in which said inclined surfaces merge, said lug or spur being provided. to engage the bottom of a post and hold the same from lateral movement. D D designate wings which project from the bottom of said socket member and have extension arms or ribs D, which serve to brace the opposite parallel walls of the socket member, while laterally-projecting wings E e):- tend at right angles to the wings D and have their lower ends tapered, as shown, it being understood that the entire base for the post is to be made of metal and of a single piece, preferably cast. The upper ends of the wings E serve to securely brace the bottom of the socket member.

In applying our invention it is our purpose to embed the wings below the socket member in the ground and secure a post or pole in the socket member by means of screws or other fastening means, and whenever the lower portion of the post or pole becomes decayed or broken it may be cut oif and the post lowered and securely held in the socket member, and by the provision of the tapering surfaces on the bottom of the socket member any moisture which might accumulate in the socket member may be drained out, thus further serving to preserve a post or pole.

What we claim is A bottom or base for posts comprising a socket member open upon two of its sides, the bottom of said socket member made up of two inclined surfaces meeting in a ridge at the center of the bottom, a pin projecting centrally through said ridge and designed to engage the bottom of a post, the portion of the base below said socket comprising wings which are disposed at right angles to each other, two of said Wings being integral with the closed sides of the socket member, as set forth.
