'.lOl ALL -WHOM IT MY CNCERN':
Be it known that I, ALRED SANDERS, of Penn Yan, in the county of Yates, and Stato ofvNew York, have v invented certain new and useful Improvements irr Car-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description" thereof,- reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification. Y
AFigure 1 is a perspective view of a draw-head provided with my improvement.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section of the same. v
Like letters of reference indicate correspondingparts in both figures.
My invention consists inA combining, with a spring-lever operated by an outside crank-work, a horizontal fasteningof the link or shackle, produced bylugs Vsecured thereto with apin passing through, the wholearranged, in such-manner that while the pin simply serve s to hold the link in place in coupling, the strain or draught, under m'otion, is applied to the lever itself, and not the pin. l
In-the drawings, Aindicates the ordinary draw-head, and B thelink or shackle.
AL lever, G, is pvoted at a, vertically, in the draw-head, with a spiral spring, b. drawing'back on the upper arm, which closes the lower arm against a stop or shoulder, c. A canbrod, d, rests in a groove,f, in the back of thellever, having a horizontal shaft, g, extending outward, with crank L on the end. By turning this crank forward, the lever is thrown back, as indicated 'byxed lines, lig. 2.
If desirable, the upper arm'of lever C may have a ratchet formed thereon, anclthe cam-rod d may be in the form of avpawl, which catches in the ratchet-teeth, and thereby holds the lever open to uncouple in switchingoll' a. train.
.The link or shackle has vertical side-lugs, zz', attached thereto near the ends, with oblong openings, c le,
therein, in which rests a small pin, l, passing horizontally through the draw-head.
The operation is as follows: v The lever C is Irst thrown back sufficiently for the link to hook around it, and then drawn forward, so as 4to allow the pin Z to pass'through and engage with lugs iz". In this condition the link is fast, either to strike hack into the next draw-head to couple, or to move forward and sustain the draught in the motion of the train. In striking back to couple, the slight pin vZ is suiiicient to hold -the lin'k in place, butin the'opposite motion,
under draught, the oblong openingsv k f: in the/lugs allow the link to draw forward sullviciently to transfer the strain upon .the leverC, thereby relieving the pin from all strain.
. To uneouple, the pin is withdrawn, and the lever thrown back, bysimply turning the crank, and without the operator going between the ears. Y
' This double attachment of the link to the lever and pin always keeps it extended and sti-1T, in proper position to couple, and the transferring of the strainrfrom the pin to the-lever insures the proper degree of strength. prefer to form a suitable sp'aee at the bottom of each draw-head," to receive a loose link or shackle lying "out of the way oftlie action of the parts, but serving as a reserve at any time in use.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to `secure by Letters Patent, is VThe combination of the side-lugs Leblong openings k c, and pins l, with the spring-lever C, and cam-rod dg h, the whole so arranged as to form a double fastening, and allow the strain to be transferred from thepn to the lever, as herein set forth.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence vof two subscribing witnesses.
l 'ALFRED SANDEIEES.
