DANGERFIELD DUN, OF LEWISPORT, KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOR TO*l HIMSELF AND WILLIAM B. MILLER, OF ySAME PLACE.Y
Letters Patent No. 81,612, dated September I, 1,868.
*litigey tigehrds maat it Vit tiges ghiera zztent fmt meting gert if tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, DANGERFIELD DUNN, of Lewisporthin the county of Hancock, and State of Kentucky,
` have invented a new. and improved Ealing-Press; and Ido hereby declare that the followi'ngis a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enableothers skilled'in the art to make and use the same, reference being hadto the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification. l l
This invention relates to anew and improved heling-press of that class in which toggle-levers are employed for operating the platen. l
The invention consists in a peculiar manner of applying the rope to the toggles, by which the -latter are operated, and in a novel manner vot'arranging the platen with the toggles, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a compact'and powerful baling-pressisobtain ed, and one which will admit of being used as `a beater-press, when required. 4 i
Th'e accompanying drawing represents a side sectional view of my invention.
A represents the frame of the press, and B the press-box. These parts may be of usual construction, and therefore do notrequire a special description. i y
C C are twopairs of toggles, the upper arms, a, of which are secured by pivot-bolts to thctop piece of the frame A, and the lower arms, a', 4secured hy pivot-bolts e to a slide, D, which is allowed to rise freely in the frame A. The arms Va a of the toggles have pulleys CZ fitted in there, around. or over which va'rope, E, passes, as'sliown clearly in the drawing. Y
By this arrangement of said rope and pulleys, the two pairs of toggles may be drawn towards each other, and the sli-fle forced down in a very ecient manner, the ropeE'extendin'gr down and passing under a pulley, CZ', at the bottom of the frame A, and the power attached to its end. The toggles are drawn apart and the slide D raised by' Vmeans. of ropes F F attached to them near their `ioints. These ropes are operated by hand.
Gr represents a platen, which has a rod, g55-attached, said rod passing up through the slide D, and havin a rope, I attached to its upper end, said rope passing over pulleys e e on the top of the frame A.
When the platen is operated, (fo-reed dowm) under the action of the toggles, the platen-rod II is attached to the slide D by a pinhf, but by removing this pin, and thereby leaving .the platen free, the latter may he used as a beater, to compact the material in thepress-hox prior to the pressing operation. This is agreat advantage, for in compressing somo substances, suoli as straw, for instance, it may, by Vthe process'oi` beating, be reduced to a comparatively small bulk, the tubular structnrcvot" 'thestraw being destroyed, and airfexpelled from it before the operation of' pressing is commenced." Y
The platen may be operated as aheater'hy any suitable mechanism which will raise it and allow it to fall or drop when fully'raised. The ordinary device for that purpose now used with beater-presses may he employed.
Having thus descrihed my invention, what Iiclaim as new, and desire to's'ecure by Letters Patent, is-
The detachable platen G, in combination with thc'tog'gles C Cnnd slide D, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
A'Iheaheve specification oi' my invention signed by me, this 28th day of April, 1868.
