JOHN B. SPANGLE, 0F GANANDAIGUA, assienon '10' HIMSELF AND CHAUN- our SPEAR, or HOPEWELL, NEW YORK;
Letters Patent No. 81,549, dated August 25, 1868.
- IMPROVEMENT IN SNOW-SHOVELS,
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: I
Be it known that I, JOHN, P. SPANGLE, of Ganandaigua, in the county of Ontario, and State of New York,
have invented a new and useful Improvement inSnow Shovels'; and I do hereby declare that the following is a sufficiently full, clear, andexactdescription thereof to enable one skilled in the art to which my said' invention appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a novel and simple construction of shovels for removing snow from sidewalks, &'c., and the object of my improvement is to produce a simple and cheap article of the above description, possessing the requisite qualities 'of lightness, strength, and durability.
In the drawing, my invention is illustrated by a perspective view. 7
A represents the hlade'of the shovel, and B the handle. The former is composed of a rectangular plate of sheet metal, having one end upturned, so as to form a baclga, and provided, except on its front edge, with marginal beads, a a M, for the purpose oistiifening and strengthening it.' v A G is a bad or loop, formed in a metallic wire, extending through the head (1*, or theones a also, if preferred, and a metallic staple or brackeuattaehed to the blade, near its centre, by rivets or other suitable means.
The handle 13 ismade ofl wood or other-suitable material, and its enlargedand suitably-formed lower end, 5, is inserted. through the. bail O and brackets D, as shown, and secured, if necessary, by a screw or tack inserted from the under side, thus forming a strong and rigid joint, and one which also adapts the handle to be readily removed, for transportation or storing, when desired.
The handle, when in position, stands at such an angle that a person may readily work the shovel with the, blade horizontal, or nearly so, as required in cleaning 0E snow, without'bending over, as with the ordinary act as a lever in elevating the load, the intersection of the flat and upturned portions of the blade forming the fulcrum. By this means, the body of the load is brought nearer the hands of the operator before it is lifted, and the strength required to raise it thus materially decreased. V p I My invention is intended, primarily, for removing snow, but it is obvious that it can be used with good effect for handling grain, malt, flour, &c., the functions required in a shovel for, handling either being similar.
Having described my invention, I clainras new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A snow-shovel, composed of the blade A, provided with the upturned rear end a, and marginal heads a a the handle B, bail C, and braeltet D, all substantially as described, for the purposes set forth.
To the abo've specification of my said improvement I have signed my.hand, this 26th day tr June, A. D. 1868.
i v i V JOHN P. SPANGLE.
