Description

PATENTED MAR. 13, 1906.
v J. L. GLEASON. JUNCTION BOXFOR ELECTRIC WIRES IN BUILDINGS.
APPLICATION FILED JU LY12,1905.
- citizen of the United UNITED STATES P T o FIcE;
JOHN L. G EAsoN, orBos'roN; MASSACHUSETTS. JUNCTION-BOX FOR ELECTRIC wmes IN- Buuomes.
mfsiaeo'r.
To all whom it may concern: 7
'Be it known thatl Joan L. Grmson, a.
tates, residing in Boston, in the county of Sufl'olk and State of Massachusetts,-have invented a certain new and usefulIm roveme'nt in Junction-Boxes for Electric Wires in Buildings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relatespai'ticularly to fireproof metallic junction-boxes adapted to re ceive the 'wires in electric-light s stems when said wires are contained in wo secured to the walls, ceilings, &c. ,of buildings en moldings and apartments therein;
In the present invention the metallic box 'is circular in shape and is constructed in such a manner that wall-sockets, switches, and
other devices connected with electric l' hting can be applied to the box, and the e ectric wires, whether two or four in number, and also the securing-bolts, will in all cases find registerin or coincident'holes in the wall of the box t ough which they can extend. In
order to accomplish this result, the top wall of the box is ro'vided with a continuous series of radial s ots or holes extending entirely around the central portionof saidwall and bein sufficiently numerous and of sufficient lengt that whatever style of wall-socket or' other device connected with electric lighting is applied to the box covering the holes or slots there will always be some of the said radial slots which will re ter with the electric wires and. the bolts an allow them to extend into the junction-box; he nature of the invention is fully described below and illustrated in the accompan drawings, in whichi Figure 1 represents a lan view'of my improved junction-box. ig. 2 is .a plan view of the same, showing a wal ocket in position jthereon and'a wooden molding extending into the box, a portion of said molding being represented as roken out. Fi 3 is a side elevation of the same, portions eing re re- "'se nted as broken out and thejunctlonox being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the under side of the same.
' V cular side wall I), provi ed at its lower end furthermore provid with one or more open* ings d, adapted to receive the ends of wooden with the annular fiaenge c, and the side wall is Specification of Letters Patent. Application and m 12, 1905. Serial no. 269,309.

. ous slots or holes h, each of-which is prefer ably considerably lon er than'it is wide and extends to a point sufilciently near the outer edgeof the top to accommodate the-electric adapted to be applied to a junction-box or .to receive the bolts for securing any such electrio-lighting device to the box.
In Figs. 3 and 4 this'is illustrated, electriclight wires 71? extendin from the molding 0 through two of the rai al slots or holes h and bolts-n extendingthrough two others of the radial o enings. Thus whether the holes in the wal -socket s for the bolts n are near together or far apart and whatever may be the position of the holes .in the socket for the electric-light wires the socket may be lied in such a position that both the bolt-holes and the wire-holes will re ister with some portions ofsomegof the ra ial openings.
In the drawings I have shown eight radial openings, and probably as many as that nupning the junction-box. I may, however,make more than eight openings, and said 0 enings should extend entirely around the hol e f and be equidistant, so as to afford provision for wires or bolts in 'any'portion of the top reswi'tches, rosettes, and other devices connect ed with electric lighting.
In order to prevent rubbin of the wires against the inner corners or e gas of the radial openings, said inner edges are beveled from the outer surface of the top a outward toward its inner surface, as shown at p in Figs. 3 and i. 1
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
tion-box, comprising a side we and a subcircle of radiating ots h, for the purpose set forth.
2. The herein-described improved junction-box, comprising a circular side wall, and a 'substantiall flat top provided with'a series of radial s otsconstituting a complete cirber would always be advisable in constiuct--.
1. The herein-described improved juncmoldings 6, having provision for electric-light wires and adapted to extend along theceilwires from any socket, rosette, or switch quired for the appllcation of wall sockets,
to 5 stantially flat top. provided with a complete cle of slots, said circle being concentric with 1 their edges beveled outward toward the un- 0 the periphery of the top, for the purpose set der side oi" the top, for the purpose set forth. forth. ln testin'ioirx whereof I have signed my 3. The hereinlescrihed improved junc name to this specification in the presence of 5 tion-box, comprising a circular side wall, and two subscribing witnesses.
a substantially fiat top provided with a series J ()HN L. GLEASON. of radial slots constituting a complete circle of slots, said circle being concentric With the periphery of the top, and said slots having Witnesses: I
