Specification of Letters Patent.
- Patented March 13,1906
Application filed'l January 12, 1905. Serial No. 240,789. I'
To {LZ/Z whom/jt may concern:
Be it known 'that I, HENRY CorlLovicH, a
citizen of the/United States, residing at Hincklcy, lin the county of Pine and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful linprovementsin Turpe'ntine-Stills, of which Ithe following is a specification.`
This invention provides :li/novel apparatus for collecting turpentine in the destructive AIO distillation of wo'od as well as saving the by-` products, such as tar and the oil thereof.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had to the' following description and accompanying drawings, in which Figure lis alongitudinal section of an a'pparatus embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the retort and furnace on the line or of Fig. 1.
Corresponding'and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated erected thereon'.
in both lthe views of the drawings lby the,
same reference characters. "The foundation 1 of the furnace 1s preferably of masonry and is of a form in lan view approximating the outline of the urnaee' 2,
able construction is offrusto-conicalform,
` the c'rownS having a central opening-whichj 1s closed by means ofa removable cover 4,5
l 'through which the wood or materialisded to which rests u" on the-'foundation 1 andl is' the retort. from its outer edge to a central. oint, from 'which a pipe 5 leads outward an downwardl in an inc ined direction, so as to carry off thev tar and like heavy .products resulting the destructive distil ation of the wood. y y retort comprises a shell or casing 6, of metal,
closed at its'4 ower end thereby.' Thel inclinedwalls 2 ofthe .furnace gradually ap'- proach thel shell' at their upper ends and touch the sidesl thereof, forminga space 7,. which' tapers toward its; upper end. and
1 -.througli whieh the heat and products 'of com-' bustionv ass.` The upper end of the shellll o. ening b, which is closed by the cover 4 when t e retort is in operation.: @The stack 8 come..

The furnace 'in its prefer- The floor 21 of the retort inclines bythe crownV B, having a central i refractory material, is placed against a portion of the retort 6 directly opposite to and near the inner end of the fire-areh or combusi tion-chamber, so as to prevent direct action of the Haine-,upon this part of the retort to avoid overheating and burning of the material under treatment.
protecting-plate 9, of tile, ire-brick, or other A' pipe 1 0 connects with the retort at a `point about midway ofits upper and lower `ends and is designed to carry off the vapor,
which when condensed constitutes the tur- L pentine. The denser 1 1, whic ucts, the li hter vapors passing olf through pipe 12 and eing condensed in the worm 13, the turpentine passing` intoa receptacle 15.
lpipe 10 connects with a conhe best results in the from the condenser eliminates the heavier prodcollectionl of the distillates are obtained by' connectin' the pipe 10 with the retort' at ipproximate y a medial. point', this having been determined by experiment,
The inclinedpipe 5 is arranged.. to deliver,v ,the tarry products into a receptacle 16. A'
pipe -17v connects with the pi e 5 rand'is (lesigned to carry off steam and ike vapor arising from the heated tar in its passage through3- the pipe 5, said vapor being reduced in a com denser 18 andthe resultantpro( uct, chiefly? oil of tar, being collected in a rec ptacle 19,.

The products ehminated'from 4the wood during the destructive. distillation pass 0Hv A firebeingstarted vin the arch or combustion chamber 8a heats the retort,vv producing flame and heat, which enter' and through the-pi es 10 and 5 in the forni of vapor and 1i ui( the .latterconsisting cliielly of tar, Whic collectsI at the bottom of the re? ICL may be tile, metal, or other material, but is depressed to direct the distillate to a common pointvof disehar e.
Havin thus eseribed the invention, what is claiine as new is- In an apparatus for they destructive distillation of wood, e masonry furnace comprising foundation-walls and a crown, the said walls inclining toward their upper ends 0r top, and the foundation .being rovided with a depressed Hoor, a bottom ess metal shell in the "crm of a right cylinder supported onl said foundation within the masonry walls with its upper end or top in contact with the masonry crown and its lower open end resting on the foundation and lsurrounding the depressed Hoor thereof, mea-ns for heating said urnace and shell, rneans for withdrawing the lighter AHENRY COPILOVICH.
