MEDIGATED TAMPON. AHLIOATION FILED JULY 24, 1903. BEHHWED MAY 36,1905.

suntan sTArEs PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND M. POND; OF RUTLAND, VERMONT.
MEDI'CATEP TAMPON- .To all whont it may concern/.-
, Vermont, have invented new and useful Inid Tampons, of whlch provements in Medicat the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in medicated tampons, and the obj ect is to simplify and improve the existing art by providmg a m edicated tampon whereby the medicament will be immediately and directly applied and administered to the affected parts, and this I accomplish by forming a cylindrical casing or capsule of soluble innoxious material, having one end closed and the other end open, then compressing and fitting into the ca sule an expansible material to serve as a ho der and absorbent the medicament during and after its dissolution, and then I seat in the open end of the capsule a gelatinous medicated plug, leaving its body naked or uncovered to apply the medicine immediately to the afiected-parts.
I have fully and theannexed drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherem- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the tampon' complete. Fig. 2-is a central longitudinal section through the tampon; Fig. 3 is a detail view of the soluble capsule. detail of the medicated plug. Fig. 5'is adetail view of the expansible filling.
' Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a soluble capsulemade of some gelatinous material and consists of a cylindrical body of such length and diameter as to suit it for the One end of the capsule is c osed and provided with a small hole 'or aperture 3, through which the withdrawal cord or string about the filling is passed. The
other end ofth capsule is open, as shown, to afford entrance for the insertion and arrange: ment of the compressible and expansible filling to the interior of the capsule, g
2 designates the compressible and expansi:
ble filling, which is composed of absorbent wool, cotton,
or spongelnade into a loose cylindrical formation, of such length and quantity as may be desired and suited to fit within.
the capsule when doubled together upon itself Preliminary to the insertion of the filling into the capsule a string 4' is looped .or bound around the middle of the bunch and its end Specification or Letters Patent Application filed July 24, 1903. Renewed May 26, 1905. fierial No. 262.461.
to prevent theescape of clearly illustrated my pres ent improvements in Fig. 4 is a and hence receive its efi'ectsat once.
Patented Feb. 13, 1 906;
left free to serve as the means for drawing the filling into the capsule and for withdrawing it from its location when required. This filling, it will be perceived, afterthe gelatinous cas- 'ing or capsule has been removed by dissolution will expandand serve as a pledget or tampon to stop or prevent the esca e of the medicament from the cavityin whic the device has been applied. i
5 designates the medicament, consisting of a suitable plug made of substance permeated or 'ermanently satu rated with the medicinal ingredients cornpounded from the prescription. This .portion of the device is of tapering or conical form of such diameter at its base as to snugly fit within the open held in position by'frictional contact and its bodyprojecting as may be desired. Adjacent to the base of the medicated soluble plug may be an annular shoulder 6, adapted to rest or set upon the edge of the capsule when the medicated plug is placed in connection with the capsule.
To assemble the. parts, so as to form the complete device, the string, which grasps the a gelatinous soluble end of the capsule and be compressible material, 1s inserted through the aperture in the bottom of the capsule from the inside and the filling drawn within the capsule until in pro or osition, and then the medicated plug is Xe with its base extending the proper distance or up the shoulder in the open end of the capsule.
lt will be perceived that this arrangement and construction of the tampon are very sunple and convenient and afford ready and direct application of themedicine to the diseased parts, because the exudations will immediately take efi'ect on the medicated plug, When the capsule containing the filling material has been dissolved, the filling is free to expand and prevent the loss of the medicine, while at the-same time-the remedy will saturate the filling.
The'device is particularly designed-for internal medication of the uterine system or of the rectum, and its medicinal a plication and use are well known to the proiession.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. .A medicated-tampon consisting of a soluble gelatinouscapsule having an open inner end,-an expansible absorbent material compressed within the capsule, and a medicated L l LO to a medicated soluble conical plug soluble gelatinous plug seated in and extending from the open end of the capsule.
2. A medicated tampon conslstingof a sol uble gelatinousvoapsule having an open inner end and the other end perforated to ermit the passage of a cord, an expansible a sorbent filling corn ressed Within the capsule, a cord oonnecte to the filling and extending out through the aperture in the ca, sule, and swing its base seated in the o and its body projeotmg therefrom.
In testimony whereof I have signed my EDMUND M. POND.
