To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PER ADoLF PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Moistening Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a moistening device adapted for home or for office use and which can be carried inthe pocket and to so construct the device that it will be simple, durable, and economic in construction and which will be effective in operation, being ready for use as long as there is any supply of moisture at hand.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view representing the application of the device, the device being shown in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device drawn upon an enlarged scale, the section being taken practically on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken at right angles to the section shown in Fig. 2 and practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the device, parts being broken away, and said view illustrates the application of a protective cap to the moistening-roller; and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the device with the cover partly opelned, the view being drawn upon a small sca e.

The body A is preferably rectangular in cross-section, and at the bottom portion of the front and the back an opening 10 is made extending from side to side, as is best shown in Fig. 5, which openings 10 cause ears 11 to be formed at the bottom portions of the sides of the body, and said ears have their lower edges rounded off or rendered convex. The ends of the spindle 12 of a moistening-roller B are pivoted in the said ears 11, and said roller is constructed of a suitable absorbent materialsuch as felt, for example. An upwardly-arched plate 13 is secured at its ends to the inner faces of the sides of the body, and

the longitudinal edges of said plate extend outward and downward at the openings 10 in sealing contact with the upper walls of said openings, as is best shown in Fig. 3. The moistening-roller B revolves quite close to the under face of the said guard-plate 13, and that portion of the plate over the roller and .within the body is fenestrated, being provided with series of transverse slots 14. The interior of the bod A above the plate 13 is provided with a fil ing 15 of sponge or other absorbent material, which filling in practice is saturated with water.

A cover 16 is provided for the upper end of the body A, which cover has downwardly-extending side flanges 17, adapted to enter the body A when the cover is closed, and also has an end flange 18. The cover 16 is pivoted in the body at its flanged end, as is shown at 19 in the drawings, and the cover is prevented from entering the body A too far by reason of a lip 20, extending from the free end of the cover 16, resting upon the upper side edge of the body when the cover is closed, as is particularly shown in Fig. 2.

The cover 16 is provided with a central opening surrounded by an upwardly-extending interiorly-threaded collar 21, adapted to receive the lower threaded portion 22 of a handle 23, and a follower-plate 24 is secured to the bottom portion of the handle 23, which follower when the cover is closed is within the body, as is shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4. Thus it will be observed that as the handle is screwed down into the body A the follower presses against the moist filling in the body, causing said filling to feed moisture to the roller B through its slotted guard-plate 13 as long asany moisture remains in the filling.

When the device is to be carried in the pocket, a protective cap 25 is provided for the roller B, which cap is open at one or at both ends and is provided with inwardly-extending flanges 26 at its upper longitudinal edges, whereby said cap 25 may be slid upon and be supported by the outwardly-extending portions of the guard-plate 13, as is shown in Fig. 4. When the device is in use at an oflice or at home, the cap 25 is not needed.

In operation after the chamber of the body A has been filled with suitably-saturated absorbent material and after adjusting the handle the roller is simply drawn or pushed over the gummed surface of the envelop or other pression 28 on the bodyA, as is shown in Fig. 5.

A moistening device comprising a chambered body provided with a lower opening, a roller mounted to revolve at the opening in the body, a slotted uard-plate located above the roller within t e body, a cover for the body, a handle adjustable in the cover, and a follower secured to the handle.

In a moistening device, a box-body having an opening in its lower portion extending through from front to rear, a moisteningroller journaled in the sides of the body at the said opening, a slotted-guard-plate located above the roller within the body, a handle, means for adjusting the said handle relative to the body, and a follower secured to the hardidle and being normallylocated within the bo A moistening device consisting of a boxbody having a' lower opening extending through from front to rear, a moisteningroller j ournaled in said body at said opening, an upwardly-arched slotted guard-plate secured within said body above said roller, the side edges of which plate extend out through the said front and rear'openings, a cover for the v body, a handle adjustably connected with the cover, and a follower secured to the inner end of the said handle.

4. A moistening device consisting of a boxbody having an opening at its lower portion extending through from front to rear, a

moistening-roller journaled in said body at the said opening, a slotted guard-plate secured within the body, the longitudinal edges of which guard-plate extend out through the openings in the body, a cover hinged to the said body, which cover is provided with a central opening and an interiorly-threaded collar around the opening, a handle having an exteriorly-threaded portion which is fitted to the said collar, and a follower attached to the inner end of the handle.
