Description

PATENTED JAN. 23, 1906.
L. N. RITTEN.
POISON BOTTLE STOPPER.
APPLICATION FILED n.4, 1905.
UNITED STATES ATENT orrron.
LOUIs N. RITTEN, OF ESTHERVILLE, IOWA.
. POISON-BOTTLE STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 23, 1906.
Application filed April 4, 1905. Serial No. 253,194.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS N. RITTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Estherville, in the county of Emmet and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Poison Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a bottle-stopper designed for use with bottles containing a poison, the object being to provide a stopper of such peculiar construction that it can be removed from the bottle without the party removing the same becoming aware of the fact that the bottle contained a poison.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my stopper in position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the stopper, the prongs of the guard being in elevation. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the guard.
In the drawings, A represents the neck of a bottle, and B a stopper, which may be of cork, as shown, or of rubber, if preferred, and to the top of the cork is secured a guard C. This guard is arranged diametrically across the top of the stopper and adjacent its ends is longitudinally split, thereby forming two members D and D at each end of the guard. The member D is pointed at its extremeend and extends outwardly in the horizontal plane of the body portion of the guard C. The member D is curved downwardly and inwardly tapering to a point, and the point of each member D is forced into a side of the stopper and guard C thereby locked in position. It will also be noted that the members D and D are offset with respect to the similar members, the curved members D, for example, being struck downwardly on one side of the guardat one end and from the opposite side at the other end. The word Poison is imprinted upon the guard C or may be omitted, if desired, as the peculiar shape of the guard will call attention to the bottle, and the label thereon will show the nature of the contents.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A stopper for poison-bottles having a guard placed diametrically across the stopper and projecting beyond the opposite sides of the stopper, and spurs struck downwardly from the guard and engaging opposite sides of the stopper.
2. The combination with a stopper oi a guard having a fiat body portion and longitudinally split adjacent each end, one of said split members at each end being pointed at its extreme end and adapted to extend outwardly beyond the stopper and in the plane of the body portion of the guard, and the other member being bent downwardly and inwardly forming a spur adapted to engage the sides of the cork, the said spurs being 01iset with respect to each other.
