Description
No. 810,164. PATENTED JAN. 16, 1906. E. A. MATTHIAS.
CLOSURE DEVICE FOR BOTTLES, JARS, AND SIMILAR VESSELS.
APPLICATION FILED DEC. 27, 1904.
EDIVARD ALEXANDER MATTHIAS, OF LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND.
CLOSURE DEVICE FOR BOTTLES, JARS, AND SIMILAR VESSELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed December 27, 1904- Serial No. 238,415.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD ALEXANDER MATTHIAS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Liverpool, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closure Devices for Bottles, Jars, and Similar Vessels, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to devices for closing bottles, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device or devices of this class which aresimple in construction and operation and which involve a particular form of neck for the bottle, jar, or similar vessel and detachable parts connected therewith, whereby the said bottle, jar, or similar vessel may be quickly, easily, and conveniently sealed and unsealed whenever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 isa side view of the top part of an ordinary jar provided with my improvement Fig. 2, a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, I have shown at a an ordinary glass or similar jar, and this jar is provided with a neck (1 the top portion of which is provided with segmental ribs or flanges 1), two of which are shown, and these ribs or flanges b in the form of construction shown extend half-way around the ar, and said ribs or flanges are triangular in cross-section and are much wider at one end than at the other, the wider end being at the opposite sides of the neck of the ar, as clearly shown at b in Fig. 2, and by reason of this form of construction the narrower end of said ribs or flanges are also at the opposite sides of the neck of the jar. The neck of the jar, at the top thereof, is beveled or downwardly and inwardly inclined both inside and outside, as shown at c in Fig. 3, and said beveled or inclined portion is formed partially in the ribs or flanges b and in the neck a and at the bottom of the incline on the inner side of the neck is an annular shoulder d, on which in practice is placed a packing-ring e of any suitable material. I
also provide a cap j; the perimeter of which is beveled or inclined, as shown at f to correspond with the bevel or inclination at c in the top of the neck a and said cap is also provided with a depending flange or rim f 3 of such diameter as to fit within the neck a and between the flange or rim f 3 and the beveled or inclined portion f 2 of the cap fis an annular groove or recess f, in which the packing-ring 6 also fits. The smaller ends of the ribs or flanges b, in addition to being of less transverse Width than the wider ends thereof, are also of less vertical depth, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and I also provide an oblong looking plate or strip 9, the length of which is somewhat greater than the greatest diameter of the neck a of the ar measured across the ribs or flanges b, and said plate or strip is provided at each end with downwardly and inwardly directed tongues or projections g and adjacent to each end with similar tongues or projections 9 the latter in the form of construction shown being cut from the material of the plate or strip and bent inwardly and downwardly, and said plate or strip is provided centrally with a pivotal opening through which passes a pivot-point or projections f formed on or connected with the Pf- In sealing the jar the packing-ring e is first placed in position, the plate or strip 9 is then slipped onto the cap f, the edges of said cap fitting between the tongues or projections 9 and the cap is then placed in position on the jar. In this operation the cap is so held that the tongues or projections g pass downwardly over the narrow ends of the flanges b, and the strip or plate 9 is then turned in the direction of the arrow x in Fig. 2. In this operation the tongues or projections move between the cap and the corresponding top portion of the neck of the jar, between which is a narrow annular space when the cap is in position, and the tongues or projections g overlap the edges of the ribs or flanges b, and the turning of the strip or plate 9 to the right or in the direction of the arrow x, as above described, securely locks the cap f in position and presses it downwardly onto the packingring or gasket 6 and forms a perfectly tight closure device for the ar. The thickness of the tongues or projections g is less than the space between the cap f and the ribs or flanges b, and this enables the cap fto be forced firmly on the packing e, and said cap is secured to the locking plate or strip 9 by the tongues or projections g My invention is not limited to the number of the ribs or fianges b nor to the eXact position thereof on the jar, and various vessels of this class may be provided withclosure devices of this class regardless of the shape of the vessels or the neck thereof.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let-V ters Patent, is- Y A jar or similar vessel provided with a neck the top portion of which is inclined outwardly both inside and outside and provided at the bottom of the incline on the inner side with an annular shoulder and at the top of the incline on the outer side with segmental flanges or ribs on the opposite sides of the neck, the transverse Width of which increases from one end thereof to the other and in opposite directions; and closure devices consisting of a packing-ring placed on said annular shoulder, a cap the perimeter of which is inclined inwardly and downwardly and provided at the bottom of the inclination with an annular recess adapted to receive said packing-ring, the diameter of the cap at the top and of the inwardly-inclined portion of the neck being such as to form a narrow annular space between the said cap and neck when the cap is in position, and a locking plate or strip placed transversely of the cap and adapted to turn thereon, said plate or strip being provided at its opposite ends with inwardly and downwardly directed tongues or projections adapted to engage the flanges or ribs at the top of the neck, and adjacent to the ends with downwardly and inwardly di-" rected tongues or projections adapted to engage the edges of the cap and 'to enter the annular space between the cap and the top portion of the neck, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 10th day of December, 1904.
- EDWARD ALEXANDER MATTHIAS.
