UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LETTERING-GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed February 6, 1905. Serial No. 244,404.
'device comprises a body member and a guide member which acts as a finder and in addition to locating the spot upon which the type is to be impressed also tendsto guide the type to such spot and, furthermore, serves to accurately define the proper distance between the several letters in the production of a word.
Another purpose of the invention is toprovide a device especially adapted for use in lettering mechanical and other drawings.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of the complete device, illustrating the manner in which it is used. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken practically on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
A represents a ruler having a longitudinal groove 10 about centrally located in one side edge and a longitudinal recess 11 in its bottom portion at its opposite side edge, as
illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3.
B represents the paper or surface upon which the impressions are to be made.
The device is usually made from one piece of sheet metal and comprises a body-section C and a guide-section C. The body-section consists of a flat upper portion 12, having a tongue 13 formed therein, and said tongue for the major portion of its length has frictional engagement with the upper face of the ruler A, upon which said body is mounted to slide, and usually at the free end of the tongue 13 a projection 14 is produced to provide a finger-hold for operation when moving the said body C on the ruler A.
In the further construction of the body C of the device a horizontal inwardly-extending flange 15 is shaped at one side edge of the body, the inwardly-extending portion of said flange being adapted to enter the groove 10 in the ruler A, while at the opposite side edge of the body C the material is bent downward and inward to form a second side flange 16, the bottom member whereof, as is shown in Fig. 3, enters the recess 11 in the ruler when the device is applied thereto.
The guide-section C of the device is located at that side of the body-section C carrying the flange 15 and extends upward therefrom. This guide-section consists of a member 17, whose outer face is flush and parallel with the said side edge of the body, and a second member 18 at right angles to the member 17 extending outwardly from the left --hand side edge of the member 17 and downward across the edge of the ruler having the groove 10, so that when the device is upon the ruler the lower edge of the member 18 will closely approach the paper or surface upon which the ruler is laid to act in the capacity of a finder, locating the exact space in which the letter is to be printed, and the said downwardly-extending end of the member 18 acts as a spacer also, as after one letter or figure is printed and it is to be followed by another, if the downwardly-extending portion of the member 18 is carried close to the right-hand edge of the last letter printed, the next letter can be accurately located, because the type 19 is secured to a bar 20, rectangular in cross-section, and in producing the impression the bar is carried downward in engagement with the members 17 and 18 of the guidesection, where the said members join, as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
As a letter or figure is printed the bodysection C is slid by hand along the ruler. The flange 16 is continuous; but by reason of the guide-section C being struck up from the body-section C the flange 15 occurs only at the end portions of the body, as is shown in Fig. 1.
WVhere the body 0 and the guide-section C connect, a brace 21 is preferably supplied, and in order to strengthen the guide-section C a corrugation 22 is usually produced therein where the members 17 and 18 join.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A lettering-guide, consisting of a bodysection, means for slidably mounting the same upon a support, and a guidesection struck up from the body-section and angular in crosssection, extending vertically from an edge of the body-section.
2. A lettering-guide, consisting of a body: section, means for slidably mounting the same upon a support, and a guide-section ex tending vertically from an edge of the bodysection, being integral with the body-section the said guide-section comprising two members, one at right angles to the other.
3. A lettering-guide, consisting of a bodysection, means for slidably mounting the same upon a support, and a guide-section extending verticallv from an edge of the bodysection, said guide-section comprising two members, one at right angles to the other, both extending above the body-section and same upon a support, and a guide-section angular transversely, extending vertically from an edge of the body-section, the latter being formed with a friction tongue struck up therefrom.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
