Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS G. LOVEGROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Damper-Regulator, of which the'following is a specification.
My invention consists of a damper, more particularlyfor the furnace of a steam-gen- 'erator,which is adapted to be affected by variations in the speed of asteam-engine, so that an equable condition of the fire of the furnace may be maintained. To this end I employ a speed-regulating valve for the engine or motor and independent means for governing the generation of steam inversely as the rate of speed of said engine or motor varies, said means embodying a centrifugally-acting device which is independent of the speed-regulating valve, a connection for said engine or motor and device whereby the latter will receive motion, and a connection for said device and damper whereby the latter will be operated.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a steam-engine having a damper-regulator embodying my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of the invention applied to another form of a governor.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a steam-engine of well-known construction, the same having a speed-regulating valve, likewise of well-known construction.
O designates a device of the order of a centrifugal governor composed of balls and appurtenances which receive rotation from the rotary shaft D of the steam-engine through the medium of the pulley E on said shaft, the endless belt F, the pulley G on the shaft H, which carries the bevel-pinion J, well-known in such governors.
In the sleeve K of the governor is the stem which falls and rises, due to the action of the governor-balls. In the present case I connect said stem with the lever M, which is pivotally mounted on a bearing N on the frame of the governor. Pivotally connected with said lever M is an arm P, which is pivotally connected with the crank Q on the shaft of a damper R, the latter occupying a flue S of the furnace of a steam-boiler, said flue being the member for the discharge of the products of combustion of said furnace or a branch connected therewith.
It will be seen that as the speed of the engine varies the governor which is affected by the same causes the oscillations or vibrations of the lever M to greater or less extent, whereby the damper R will receive closing and opening motions, and thus effect the fire of the furnace, so that the same may be maintained in an equable condition, and thus also uniformity is maintained in the volume of steam generated, the effect of which is evident in economy of fuel, &c.
In order to adjust thedamper so that it oecupies its proper angle in the flue and set the lever relatively to the connection on its ends so that it has no lost motion, I employ the screw T, which is fitted in a sleeve on the frame of the governor and has its point adapted to bear against the proper limb of said lever, so that it may be made to exert more or less pressure on said lever, the eifect of which is evident.
In Fig. 2 I show another form of centrifugally-actuated device, the same being adapted to actuate the sleeve U, with which is engaged the lever V, the latter being mounted on a suitable fixed member and having connected with it the cord, wire, chain, or other flexible piece W. which is passed around guide-rollers X and attached to the lever Y, which is pivotally connected with the shaft or axis of the damper, the operation being the same as in the previous construction; but in either case I do not employ the centrifugally-actuated device to regulate the engine, as this is accomplished by the device B shown'in either figure, said device being independent of the centrifugallyactuated device.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A pivoted furnace-damper and mechanism adapted to regulate the same consisting of a centrifugally-operated device and a connection with the same and the axis of the damper, and a motor having a regulatingvalve which is independent of said centrifugally-operated device, said centrifugally-operated device being connected with the motor to be actuated in unison therewith.
2. A furnace-damper, a motor, a regulating-valve for said motor, and a centrifugallyactuated device independent of said regulating-valve, said damper being adapted to control the rate of combustion of the furnace and connections for said device and damper, said centrifugally-operated device being connected with the motor to be actuated in unison therewith.
3. In a furnace-damper, a motor, a regulating-valve for said motor and independent means for governing the generation of steam inversely as the rate of motion of the motor varies.
4.. The combination of amotor,aregulating valve therefor, a damper for controlling the rate of combustion in a steam-generating furnace, a centrifugallyactuated device independent of said regulating device, means for transmitting motion from said motor to said centrifugally-actuated device and means for transmitting motion from the latter-named device to said damper.
5. A pivoted furnace-damper, a centrifugally-operated device having a movable member, a lever connected with said movable member and the axis of said damper, and means interposed in said connection for adjusting the angle of said damper, in combination With a motor having a regulating-valve and means for operating said c'ntrifugally- I operated device from said motor independent trifugally-operated device from said motor independent of said regulating-valve.
7 In a damper-controller for directly regulating the draft to the furnace of a steamboiler,a centrifugally-operated device adapted to control the damper in combination with a valve operative independently of said centrifugally-operated device for regulating the supply of steam from the boiler to a motor.
