' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 20, 1905. Serial No. 246,418.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBOT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, State of New Yorlchave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hydrocarbon-Motors, of

The invention consists, essentially, in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter described, and claimed specifically.
The accompanying drawing represents diagrammatically and in sectional elevation the parts essential in carrying out my invention practically.
M represents any desired or well-known construction of motor, of which m is the combustion or firing chamber, shown as formed in the upper part of the piston-cylinder, although this is not material, since an external bulb or firing-chamber may be used, if desired.
B isa mixing-chamber mounted upon the combustion chamber and communicating therewith through a port 6, closed normally by the suction-valve (J, which opens against the resistance of the spring 0. The mixingchamber is provided with an intersticed or perforated screen S of any desired form and construction, as of woven wire, extending laterally across said chamber and between the valve-seat b, and a plurality of injectors, preferably three, as shownnamely, one, a, for alcohol and one, 70, for kerosene-oil and one, n, for naphthaall three arranged to inject their respective fluids against the screen S. These nozzles or injectors are shown symbolically in the drawing, since any special design or known construction thereof may be used without departing from the spirit and intent of my invention in this respect, the essential feature being the provision of means whereby alcohol, naphtha, and hydrocarbon, either individually or collectively or in any desired combination, may be caused to impinge against the screen S. To this end I have shown each injector provided with independent valve (0 k a, respectively, and have omitted the ordinary piping and other connections as not essential to the illustration of the principle involved.
P is a pipe or nozzle for introducing air under pressure into the mixing-chamber B, preferably in front of the screen S and substantially at right angles to the line of injection of the several forms of hydrocarbon. This pipe P is provided with a regulatingvalve 10' and is connected with any suitable reservoir or source of air-supply under pressure.
In use alcohol and compressed air or naphtha and compressed air, or all three. are introduced simultaneously intothe mixingchamber and are drawn into the combustionchamber through the valve 1) by the manual reciprocation of the piston in the well-known manner resorted to in starting motors of this class, the preliminary charges thus obtained being fired by the igniter I to effect the preparatory heating of the engine when the hero sene may be introduced, the lighter hydrocarbons being continued for a while longer and then shut 011', if desired, or any or all three forms of hydrocarbon may be used singly or in any combination desired. The injectors a, 70, and n are preferably, though not necessarily, arranged with relation to each other so as to converge toward a common point or center beyond the screen S, as shown, so that when two or more jets are used simultaneously they will impinge against the screen S at different but approximate points. In any case after the preliminary heating of the parts the compressed air introduced by its expan 'sion after entering the mixing-chamber takes up and absorbs the hydrocarbon, the impact of the latter against the screen S atomizing the same, and thereby facilitating its incorporation into or with the air to form a uniform admixture. Thus each charge introduced into the combustion-chamber is in the best possible condition, the component partsscreen either independently or simultaneously, I and means for introducing compressed air into said mixing-chamber for the purpose described.
