T0 ALL WHOM IT'. MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, C. M. HAWES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Patterns for Trimming Hat-Brims; and I dol hereby declare thatl the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those'skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyingidrawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to a new anduseful improvement in patterns for trimming hat-brims, and it consists 1n attaching `the pattern to-a revolving frame, constructed and arranged in such a manner as to admit of one pattern being readily detached from the, frame, and another, of a different size, readily applied to it, so that hat-brims of different sizes may be trimmed, the revolving frame admitting of the work being done very`expe' ditiously and in a perfect manner. v v Y Hithertothepatterns have not been arranged so as to admit of'thchrims being trimmed with facility. Sometimes the pattern is simply held in one hand and turne'd bythe operatorV in a very inconvenient way, while the knife isapplied to the brim with the other hand; and some place the pattern on a rude stand orlhlock on a bench or table, andturn thebloek while trimming the brim.. v
My invention, as will be presently seen, is a great improvement over either of these plans.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings-#- Figure'l is a. `vertical central section of my invention, taken in the line x x, fig. 2.
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same. I v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 4
A. represents a base, which may beconstructed of woodor metal, and is provided with an Vupright central pin, B, and i A i C is a circular plate or disk, which is provided orrformed with a central upright tube, D, through the top of which a screw, E, passes, and rests on the upper end of the'pin B of base A, as 4shown clearly in lig. 1. By turning this screw, Ethe plate C may be adjusted higher or lower, as desired. y Y
To the plate C thereare attached three upright springs, F,"each of which has a. pin, a, projecting at right angles from its upper end, and these pins tit in holes in the pattern G, and' holdthe latter firmly in position, the elasticity of the springs keeping the pins in thc holes ih the pattern. i y
It will be seen fromvthe above description that the pattern G may be readily turneder rotated., and the brim of the hat, when the hat is placed on, the pattern G, 'trimmed with thcfgreatest facility by applying a knife to the edge of the brim, the edge of the pattern serving asa guide.- y
In order to detach `one pattern, G,.and `apply another, all that is required is simply to compress the springs F, so as to draw their pins a' out from ,the holes in the pattern, and then lit the lotherpattern over the springs,-
so that the pins may pass into its holes.
I claimvas new, and desire'to secure by Letters Patent- The revolving plate C,-with'npright springs or elastic bars F attached, provided with pins @at their upper tends, to fit in' holes in the pattern G, all arranged substantially in the'manner as'and for the purpose set forth.
C M.l HAWES.
