SHAPING MACHINE.

PERRIN G. MARCH, OF FERNBANK, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CINCINNATI SHAPER COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
SHAPING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1905.
Application filed August 4:, 1902. Serial No. 118,322.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PERRIN G. MARCH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fernbank, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shaping-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of my specification. My invention relates to shaping-machines, and more particularly to the means for determining the position and extent of the stroke of the ram.
It consists of a simple and economical but eiiicient mechanism and arran ement by which the nicest ad'ustments of t e position of the ram and the ength of the stroke may be made with ease and accuracy.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a shaping-machine, showing the ram with my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a portion of the sane. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the opposite s1 e.
A is the ram, operated'in the usual manner through the pitman C, driving-arm C", andgear-wheel D, the pitman C bemg connected, respectively, to the arm C and the ram by means of sliding bolts and adjusting-nuts c a, working in thegrooves c a. To adjust the len th of the stroke, the position of the bolt in t e slot 0 is changed, and to adjust the 10- cation of the stroke the position of the bolt in the slot (1 is changed. In each case it is necessary simply to loosen the nut c or a, or both, when both the length of the stroke and its location are to be changed, and then push forward or pull back the ram until the sliding bolts are brought to the required position in their respective slots, when they are clamped in this position. A suitable scale at the edge of the groove 0 facilitates the proper adjustment of the blocks inthe grooves for any required length of stroke. In order to impart the required movement to the ram in thus adjusting the location of the stroke and its length and to enable the operator to give it any desired movement, large or small, so that its position may be accurately and easily adjusted to the smallest fraction of an inch, I provide the ram with a rack E along its side, extending in the direction of its length, and provide the top plate F of its slideway with sockets F, in which fits a removable pin G, provided with a pinion .G, the rack E being so arranged with reference to the plate F as to be in a position to be engaged by the pinion G when the pin G is inserted in any one of the sockets F. It is evident that by rotating the pin G, which is provided with a suitable handle, any movement, even the smallest, may be readily applied to the ram A. The advantages of such an arrangement will be apparent to any mechanic and need no mention further than that already given. It is also evident that'the mechanical details may be varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to claim as new and to cover by Letters Patent is In a shaping-machine, in combination with a ram and frame supportin the same, the driving-arm, the pitman, and the adjustable connection of said pitman, respectively, to the said driving-arm and to the said ram, a rack on said ram, sockets in the top plateof the slideway of the ram, and a removable pin provided with ahandle at one end, and adapted at the other to fit in said sockets, anda pinion secured to said pin, in position to engage said rack, substantially as described.
