Description
@uiten tetra @et-tent. @frn ROBERT F. DoBsoN, or. contraten, CANADA..
Letters Patent No. 80,613, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVED BROOM.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONCERN:
Be it known that I, ROBERT EDOBSOVN, temporarily of Goderich, in the county of Huron, and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of'rooms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and -exact description of the same, suieient to enable one skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to fully understand and use the same, 'reference being had to thev accompanying drawings, forming a. part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is atop view ofthe turning-ring. l
Figure 2 is a'side view, showing the corn as first secured to the handle, which is inserted intn the .holding-` barrel, preparatory to the operation of turning the corn.
Figure 3 is a side View, representing the corn as having beenvdrawn partly through the turning-ring, and in a position to he bound. A v
Figure 4 is a side or front view of the broom as completed.
My invention relates to an improvement in the mode of securing the broom proper, or the corn, toits handle, and lit consists, first, inse fastening the broom-corn that the free portions shall extend towards the upper en d ofthe handle, and'tlien bending or turning the said corn back upon itself, and there scouring it, as will hereinafter ,be morefully described.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures. K
In lcarrying out my invention, I take the c'orn, E.E,`and irst well secure it,at Faround the handle C,
near the lower end of' the latter.. By reference to fig. 2 of the drawing, it vwill be seen that, at this stage in the manufacture, the free portion of the corn, which it is intend-ed shall ultimately constitute the sweepingsurface, is extended toward the upper end of the handle.
D represents a barrel of the kind employed on 4rolling-maeliincs in common use. From one end of this barrel extend braces B B, which. support, at their outer extremities, the ring a. The c orn' having lbeen-sceured to the handle, as4 above. described, the said handle is inserted downward through the ring a and barrel D, as shown in fig. 2. The ring a, passing up under the corn, causes the'same to spread, as represented.
The handle is now drawn downward through the`barrel and ring, carrying with it the corn, which is doubled back upon itself, or turned inside out, and caused to assume the position shown in iig. 3 of the accompanying drawings. The broom ispressed into shape for sweeping, in any of the known-forms, `and there secured, either in theusual manner, that is, sewing with twine, or it is surrounded with a narrow band of' metal, represented 'at g in fig. 4. If this latter course ispursued, tlieband is secured to the upper part of the handle by a rivet, H.
From the above description of my invention, it will be seen that a much-improved article isproduced as readily, in every respect, asthe ordinary broom, durability, neatn-cssfand simplicity being adrantageously combined in its structure. I
The corn, boing doubled back, is bent partly around the fastening-wire, and is thus prevented from working out from under the same while the broom is in use. When the fastening-band is used, much time is saved in the manufacture, and the handle-is prevented 'from being pulled out of the broom.
I do not wislrto claim broadly'the use of the metallic fastening-band, as I am aware that something ofthe kind has been Yused before.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The turning-ring' a, affixed to the rolling-barrel D by means of the braces B, substantially as herein shown and described, for the purpose set forth. i
2. As anew article of manufacture, a broom in which the corn is applied and secured as herein shown and described. l
Certified to be the specifications referred to in the drawings hereunto annexed.
Dated, at Goderich, in the county of Huron, Dominion ot' Canada, this'lith day of February, 1868.
ROBERT F. DOBSON.-
