Description
W; F. DAUGHERTY. Feather Renova'tor.
Patented Aug. 4, 1868.

W. F. DAUGHERTY, OF WELLINGTON, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO .HIMSELF AND HIRAM ELLIOTT, OF SAMEILACE.
Letters Patent No. 80,610, dated August 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN IEATHER-RENOVATOR.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, W. F. DAUG-HERTY, of Wellington, in the county of Lorain, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feathcr-Renovators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and complete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a plan view.
Figure 2 is an end view.
Figure 3 is a transverse section.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the views.
In fig. 1, A represents a cylinder, which may be constructed of any desirable size, being provided with a lid or cover, 13, extending from end to end of the cylinder. Through the centre of this cylinder passes the tube or pipe C, fig. 2, pipes D D being secured along each side of the said cylinder, shown in fig 3, indicated by the dotted lines 0, fig. 1. These pipes are provided with openings :1, more or less, as may be desired, through which the steam passes to they feathers, which are placed in the cylinder around the pipe 0, the feathers being cleaned in the following manner: I
The cylinder is placed in a suitable position, and made to revolve by any desirable means. The steam from the boiler is passed into the mouth of the'pipe G, and is conveyed by small pipes 6, indicated by the dotted lines, fig. 2, to thc sidc pipes I) D,\vhere itpasses from these pipes into the cylinder, among the feathers, cleansing and renovating them. 7 A
' E E are faucets, one at each pipe, D D, for the purpose of shutting oii' or admitting the steam to said pipes, as desired.
I When the feathers are steamed suflicicntly, they are then (1" ed, by shutting ed the steam from the said pipes D D, and allowing it to pass into the central pipe, heating it, and by the cylinder revolving, the feathers are tossed about the pipe, and thoroughly dried.
In the renovators now in use, the steam is shut off from the cylinder by a valve, attached to each opening, and the whole of which are operated at once by a rod passing through the entire lcngth of the pipe, and to which each valve is connected. I
It oftenhappens that one or more of the openings andv'a-lves become clogged and obstructed by the feathers and dirt, in which case the steam cannot be entirely shut oil from the cylinder, for the purpose of drying the feathersgthcreby causing much trouble and delay in the progress of the work, in consequence of leakage, to
avoid which, I have introduced the faucets F, above described, one at the end of each pipe, so that, on turning the key in the proper direction, steam is allowed to pass intothe pipes, and by the same means shut it off; hence we avoid the use of the valves,.and the care and expense of the same, thereby rendering the machine less expensive and more easily managed.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The faucets E, in combination with the pipes b and side pipes D D, for the purpose specified. W. F. DAUGHERTY.
Witnesses: I
W. H. BURRIDGE, J. HOLMES.
