To all whom it may concern.-
- Be it known that I, ERNST WEILER, manufacturer, of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Vehicle-Wheel Rims or Fellies, of which the following is a s ecification.
Wheel rims or fe lies consisting of a number of parts adapted to be screwed together by means of continuous screw-threads are already known; likewise constructions in which the rim halves or members are adapted to be assembled by means of oblique slots and pins or by means of a helically-arranged bead or protuberance and with the hel of set-screws. These wheel-rims, however, ack the characteristic of the rim which forms the subject of the present invention, which consists in the fact that during the assemblage of the rim members these latter, in addition to an automatic centering, are only actually held upon the meeting of conical or wedge shaped abutting edges.
The construction which forms the subject of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a portion of the rim in front elevation with the edge removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 4 is a cross-section; and Figs. 5 to 15,inclusive, are views in cross-section of various modifications of the structure shown in the preceding figures, showing only a portion of the felly and of the removable tire-securing rim in position thereon.
This construction is characterized by the fact that the two rim members are provided with wedge-like ribs (1, either separate one from the other or overlapping, so that after the application of the ring with the screw-threads rotation through a very small angle is suflicient forobtaining a certain connection. In order to obtain during the attachment of the flange on the rim a mutual centering and thereupon a rigid and secure connection between the two assembled rim members, the outer edge of the rim-periphery is chamfered so that only upon the fixing of the corrcspondingly-chamfered inner edge of the rim-flange which is to be attached is a completely-rigid assemblage produced. The automatic centering is further facilitated owing to the fact that between the separate ribs a effecting the fixing a certain amount of play or space is left, which permits of relative displacement of the two parts, if required, and also assists the firm assemblage of the. chamfered faces I) on the abutting edges.
The principle of the conical faces I) may be utilized in numerous constructions. Figs. 4 to 15 show various arrangements of this kind. It is not only a question of the form of the wedge-like ribs, but also of the centering and the joint between the rim nd the abutting edge forming the detachab e IIIIlcrown. As shown in Figs. 14 and 15, by way of example, the rim edge may also advantageously be constructed in two separate parts, one of them being formed as a'smooth rim edge to be passed over the rim, while the second part, which is crown-like and provided with the ribs referred to, is intended in being united to the rim to center the smooth rim edge which has been previously placed in position and to press against the rubber tire. It will of course be understood that in the case of this separate crown-shaped part also all the different wedge-rib forms and also the various formations ofits abutting edge may be employed. By means of these oblique faces not only is an automatic centering obtained, but also a perfect joint between the two assembled rim members, which is the better insured if before the assemblage they are coated with a solid lubricant, which prevents moisture, dust, and dirt from entering the rim. The perfect junction might also be obtained by forming on both the edges coming into contact a small groove serving for the reception of a packing-strip of some suitable material.
Having explained the nature of my invention and described forms of constructing and the manner of using the same, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A wheel rim or felly in two parts, comprising a detachable ring or flange in which the ring and the outer edge of the rim carry helically formed ribs bearing mutilated screws engaging one with the other and a tireengaging flange on each part by which the tire is wedged into and held firmly in position when the parts are screwed together.
2. In a device of the class described, a dismountable outer wheel-rim combined with an inner rim in which wedge ribs on each form a screw engagement so formed as to hook one within the other, so that they pre sent conical pairs of wedge faces parallel with each other, by means of which the centering and joint formation between the two assembled parts is simultaneously obtained, and a flange on the wheel-rim, and on the inner rim, between which the tire is held.
3. In a device of the class described, a Wheel felly or member having a flange on one side adapted to engage the securing edge of a rubber tire, a mutilated or non-continuous screw-thread formed upon the unflanged edge of the felly, and an annular like threaded and flanged member adapted to engage with the felly to secure the tire in place.
4. In a device of the class described, a Wheel felly or member having a flange on one side adapted to engage the securing edge of a rubber tire, a mutilated or non-continuous screw-thread formed u on the unflanged edge of the telly, an annu ar like threaded and flanged member adapted to engage with the telly to secure the tire in place, and a packing-gasket of elastic material interposed between the two screw-threaded parts.
5. In a device of the class described, a wheel-rim having a flange for securing one side of the elastic tire and an annular member with a coacting flange fitted to the wheelrim by means of a wedging bayonet-joint.
